Hello everyone!
The movie I chose was Studio Ghibli’s “Spirited Away” by Hayao Miyazaki! This was the second Ghibli film I watched (the first being Totoro), and it really left an impact on me because the animation was beautiful and it had an extremely meaningful storyline. Till now I still remember some of the lines by the characters! Anyhow, the quotes I chose are as shown below:
- Hold your breath while you cross the bridge. Even the tiniest breath will break the spell, and then everyone will see you.
- I’ve gotta get out of here. Someday I’m getting on that train.
- Nothing that happens is ever forgotten, even if you can’t remember it.
- You humans always make a mess of things. Like your parents who gobbled up the food of the spirits like pigs. They got what they deserved.
It was honestly really hard for me to come up with images for this project because my mind was visually fixated on the characters from the movie. Collaging different images together to create the same meaning of the quote was hence quite challenging.
Below are just some of the experimentations I did for the quotes! I really liked the threshold effect, and how it seemed to work well with most of the styles in my images.
Hold your breath while you cross the bridge. Even the tiniest breath will break the spell, and then everyone will see you.

Different quote with similar meaning from the movie:
You humans always make a mess of things. Like your parents who gobbled up the food of the spirits like pigs. They got what they deserved.
I’ll be explaining more about the ideation behind my images in our soft crit / critique, but these are mainly to show my progress and hopefully get some comments on how to improve them :)!
