Art Final Piece

I have a fear of animals in general, particularly dogs. This may be due to a traumatic experience I had as a child. I am afraid of any forms of contact with them and have this unrealistic (quite impossible as well) fear of their teeth biting me to death.

In my sketches, I first explored this by depicting a ferocious dog from my perspective. I am trying to hide the dog from my sight with my hand due to my fear. Next, I played with scale quite a bit, making the shadow of a dog look like a monster that is much bigger than I am (the silhouette of a girl).

In my final piece, I played with scale and shadows quite a bit. There is a hand shadow puppet of a dog’s head made from my hand against a light source. And at the other side of the picture, there is me trying to back away from a dog.

I do understand that my fear is irrational, and is nothing more than me thinking that the dog is baring his fangs at me when in truth the dog is just sitting there without posing any threat to me. I also enlarged the hand shadow puppet a lot to signify how small and afraid I felt in front of the dog, due to my fear of it. A spotlight is hitting on the picture plane to create enlarged and elongated shadows to give the sense of dread I feel whenever I am close to a dog.

Fear is made up by oneself; as represented by my hands creating a grotesque shadow from a harmless dog, therefore overcoming it has to start from oneself.20151118 - (1) 20151118 - (2) 20151118 - (3)

Tourism in Singapore

In the piece, there are two windows to represent the two different sides of tourism in Singapore. One is the heritage tour, which have the more traditional aspects of Singapore, and in the piece, those are the old shophouses lined up in Chinatown. The window frame is also one found in the shophouses to invoke a sense of nostalgia. On the other side, it is the more commercialized form of tourism, represented by the skyscrapers we can easily see in the central area. The window for this side is made of glass, and the skyscrapers are towering over us, to give a feeling of coldness and intimidation.

All Singaporeans knows that for Singapore to continue prospering, we have to constantly upgrade our infrastructures. But I believe that we should continue to preserve our heritage and keep the ‘old’ buildings intact, not only for the sake of diversifying the kind of tourism Singapore has to offer, and also to allow future generations of Singaporeans to know and enjoy a different side of Singapore.20151007 - (1) 20151007 - (2) 20151007 - (3)

Home Drawing

A place that one will joyfully go back to just like an innocent child after a long, tiring day – that’s home to me. The feeling of comfort and warmth that welcomes me when I open the front door is what I love the most. Home is where I can put down everything on my shoulders, take down my ‘mask’, and really just be myself. No one will know what I am doing and judge me for it, and the sense of security is what I love to indulge in. It is the familiarity of my home that is able to make me feel safe, so I hope there will not be any major changes to mu home and it should stay as it is.20150916 - (1) 20150916 - (2) 20150916 - (3)
