Site Visit Presentation & First Site Visit Observations

Kent Ridge is a neighbourhood area based in Pasir Panjang. Most people will know that Kent Ridge is where the National University of Singapore is. In addition to that, there is also a park called Kent Ridge Park which is one of the two notable parks within the Southern Ridges. I chose to focus on Kent Ridge Park for my zine so I paid a visit there to make my observations.

I first went there by taking bus 92 where you will end up walking to the entrance that will lead you to the Kent Ridge Pond. I found out on the second visit that I can actually enter the park through Vigilante Drive which I will share more in the next post.

As the first thing in sight was the Kent Ridge Pond, I first observe the surroundings there. I noticed that there were people strolling and jogging. There was even one uncle fishing at the pond. However when I walked along the pond, I noticed a ‘No Fishing’ sign but 10 steps away there was a ‘Fishing Etiquette’ signage so I got pretty confused on whether it was allowed to fish there. Later on I realised that it was probably that are where the ‘No Fishing’ sign was that you cannot fish because it was pretty dangerous as there were no barriers.

I walked further down to the Dragonfly Pond where I expected to find some dragonflies there however I didn’t see any of them. I thought that they dedicated a pond for the dragonflies so there must be abundant there but I was greeted with none or perhaps I just didn’t have the luck then.

I decided to walk further into the park towards the canopy walk. I ended up at this path leading up to the lookout point at Kent Ridge. Along the path, there were many wild flowers. These wild flowers seem pretty unique to me. They look different from the wild flowers I see around my own neighbourhood. I took photos of them that included in the presentation thinking that I may need them as reference for my zine.

As I walked further down, I reached the lookout point at Kent Ridge. This is when I realised that I actually came to Kent Ridge Park before, All along I thought it was my first visit there. This is also when I realised that the infamously named ’99 bends’ road is the road leading up to this lookout point. I did my research and realised that this road is termed one of the creepiest roads in Singapore. It used to be a popular spot for drag races.  This gave me some ideas of including creepy designs in my zine.

Finally, I ended up at Bukit Chandu where the Reflections at Bukit Chandu museum is. As it was a Sunday, the museum wasn’t open so I didn’t get a chance to enter to take a look.
