Logline: A girl comes-of-age and bears the brunt of familial and social pressures. She wrestles with a mind that is jaded, and a heart that yearns to hold on to youth and innocence.

Her emotions and thoughts manifest themselves into her surroundings; ideally represented by a surreal and playful visual landscape.

Preliminary Plot:

The shot opens with a birthday cake crashing into the ground. Read more →

Inspiration / After watching “unfriended” and “Noah”, in which both films are depicted entirely on a computer screen, I’ve been fascinated with this new form of storytelling.

My film would be done in similar fashion. It takes place in both the character’s reality and whatever that is taking place on the computer screen. Logline /

Ansen, This is a good storyline. But to me I think the Stranger Joe is speaking to 'gave in' to tell her issues too easily. What could be improved could possibly Joe 'earning' her trust.   May I suggest that this Stranger isn't much of a stranger but his own mother where the audience finds out at the end of the film. In the beginning, you could establish a very strained and estranged r/s between him and his mother. Then his mother, just feels like the world is crashing down on her after like a divorce or something and somehow no one in the world can save/support/understand her. Eventually when she meets her son on the anonymous chat, neither knows their respective identities. Then when Joe finally earns the Stranger's trust, she reveals her picture to him. He gets shocked and then she immediately close the chat. Joe rushes to his room only to find that the room is locked and he desperately tries to open the door but to no avail. And then he realises how he could have been a better son to his mother and tries to get his mother to not commit suicide. I'm not sure if this helps but yea, just a thought. Because for me, stranger to stranger is like, "oh let the police handle this case". Let me know what you think!
I think this is a rather interesting concept, however kinda hard to vary in terms of shots and look, making it highly demanding in the acting field to push the dynamics of the film. Jack's idea is quite interesting and much stronger, though the idea of coincidence seems somewhat like a 0.01% hit rate. It also takes the concept further from the online chat medium. I like the idea of total strangers though, the idea of awkwardly getting close to each other through the sudden trial placed between them. There seem to be more possibilities of a nice gradual buildup till shit hits the fan. The current movie "NERVE" has some possible "behind the screen" point of view shots that could work. Though perhaps might be a little over the top.

Jack's Idea for Directing Class' Short Film

JACKSOAT

@ JACK;s-OAT

Hi class,

Below is the idea that I have for my short film. Please do have a read and feedback with comments. Thank you!

Promise by Syahir Jack Ezekiel

Thank you guys! Have a fantastic weekend ahead!

Sounds like potential for some insane cinematography - glowly altar lights, slow fuming incense, etc. The part about chanting "come back" in Chinese does sound a lilttle odd though, in my opinion i think it doesn't need to be that forthright. Perhaps a gesture like "cradle-rocking" in her seat, pushing anyone that tries to sit in the seat beside her away or putting food in a rice bowl that belongs to no one at the table, saying the Chinese respectful "eat" to an  empty chair might work better. All the best!
I really like your idea and the subtle twist. I think it would be very interesting to see this play out as something slightly horrific and then turn it into something so emotional towards the end - but at the same time, still chilling.
Hi Matt! Thank you for the feedback. Truly appreciate your comments on the chanting. I do agree with you and I think it will be a little too odd and a giveaway too if she keeps chanting 'come back'. I certainly don't want the audience to be fed with too much information about the twist. Yup those suggestions are great! I'll keep them in mind (because prior to this I've been wrecking my brains out and thinking of like ways of how one would deliberately disrespect the customs). Thanks again Matt!
Hi Ansen, thanks for your comment! Yup the overarching direction and mood will be horror and then it immediately turns into a love story. Creepy yet emotional. I aim to attempt to reconcile horror and romance at the same time without showing too much cheesy moments, like the movie 'Ghost'. Let's see how things go! Do continue to feedback if you have any!

I’ve got to admit, I never like to answer these questions. I don’t think I could choose, and at the instance I am asked it the answers just escape me.

That being confessed, I shall siphon off the top of my head, this lovely Japanese film I recently revisited: Nobody Knows

I watched it when I was much younger, and since then Read more →

Shaun of the DEAD – Edgar Wright

Edgar Wright is bae and I superlike how he is consistent in his style of narration across all his films. ‘Shaun of the Dead’ is the very first Edgar Wright’s film that I watched ages ago and because of this particular film, I have fallen in love with all his other films.

I love Jake’s character (Louis), and how the plot unfolded to something I did not imagine / predict.
