You set the mood of the 1st piece to a very subtle mood. Therefore the colors chosen have too much hue contrast. That will not create the same mood easily. The second piece the stronger light and dark contrast goes well with the color contrast. So the first piece needs a more subtle hue change (like within brown / grays or blues or dull greens).
