White Still Life

Oil paint on wood panel, 2017

The composition was based on circular forms and diagonal grids. I used both warm and cool grey tones. The focus point (bowl at the center) had more cool grey tones than the rest of the painting. The blue colours create more visual interest to the painting. The point of entry could be from the bone (top) or the harsh shadow (bottom), which leads to the smaller cups (left) and then towards the bowl (center). The blue dragons on the bowl also helps to strengthen the focus point.

Personal Object Still Life

Acrylics on Wood Panel, 2017

This artwork represents the connection with my mother. My mother has been planing different variety of plants at the community garden in my area. There was once where she brought back home a few trimmed cotton plants and gave it to me. I begin to dry those cotton plants and collect it in a glass jar. Every now and then she would bring some cotton plants when it grew too tall at the garden. Cotton plants remind me of my connection with my mother and the connection with nature, its visual form looks like clouds. It also represents freedom, growth and my own world.

In the beginning of the drumming, I felt calm. In a more relaxation state, I  begin to see roots grew from my feets & legs and it connected to the ground with Earth. I also saw black and white irregular circle shape formed later.
The painting feels like something is emerging within me to the surface but I don’t know what is it. The painting after also reminded me of my roots & connection with Earth.
I could imagine that other people who listen to this drumming would enter into a deep relaxation state and they might discover something within them that they are not aware of yet.
I’d tried to paint roots and irregular circles but it was too complicated and didn’t express the calmness I’d felt. Therefore, I had decided to add more white to bring in the calmness and flow into the painting.
The drip marks added an interesting touch to the painting. It also creates another unexpected surprise that could express my feelings of something emerged within me.
