FORM MAKING

FINAL

This was an exciting experience for me, as I had no prior experience in product design, this allowed me to approach the project with an open mind, and I was excited to pick up a new skill. This project has opened my eyes to the possibilities of different forms a product could have and the challenges it encompasses throughout this process.

The product above is called a beer hairdryer. It is a hairdryer in a shape of a beer bottle. I chose this form rather than a normal form of a hairdryer as I wanted to break out of the conventional form and shape of a hairdryer. I wanted to challenge myself and I believe through this, I would be able to discover new ideas and possibilities. Its main target audience is men of any age. As hairdryer is associated as a feminine product, I hope through my product, it would bring on a masculine image. The reason of a charging port is so that it could be portable.

The challenges I faced would be getting the general shape of the object, as the object is in a cylindrical shape, it is quite hard to achieve manually by hand, I spent a huge amount of time just to get it in a shape I was satisfied with. The other challenge was the putty. It was difficult to ensure every part of the object was covered with putty and perfectly sanded, as it was difficult applying putty on hard-to-reach small corners (buttons, small gaps, etc. ), much less trying to sand them.  One last challenge would be the creation of the hollow space in the charging port. It would be a tedious and tough process, if I was to manually dig a hole in the foam and sand it. Fortunately, I listened to the advice of my classmates who suggested me to try a method my prof was talking about, and that is to cut another foam base of the same circumference, cut a hole through it and stick the ring onto my foam base. (see modelling process)

Through this project, I have learnt to be patient and not rush things, especially when it came to the putty part of the project, I have learnt to give it time to dry before sanding and it takes time and consistent effort to achieve a desirable outcome. I have also learnt to be flexible and take in different advices and try different methods when difficulties and challenges arises. Lastly, I have enjoyed the process and is quite happy with the outcome.
