We had a lot of ideas, including the idea of a mini-projector, in the end we went with the idea of jewellery box, I incorporate a bit of the idea of the projector by changing it into a circular panels of pictures that rotates on a spinning table on top of the jewellery box. (Memory Loop)

Initial Idea

These are the first few sketches of the initial ideas, which on top of everything, included a fabric book that sits on a ball bearing and comes out when client uses the stick to push it out from the other end. There is also a light bulb in the memory loop, including a gargoyles-like edge at the side of the jewellery box to showcase the idea of Harry Potter, another movie she likes.

The first few ideas had too many components, and there is no central theme, everything seems to sit on its own, and do not blend together at all.

Upon discussing with my tutor and the client, I decided to strip off everything and go with The Central theme of vintage, specifically 1950-70s.

The bottom part of the work which is a jewellery box encompasses the idea of Asian vintage, traditional Chinese embroidery box look, while the top part talks about the western vintage, old film rolls and polaroids which is what I’m going to use to place in the memory loop.

Multi-purpose Memory Loop

Idea of ‘film rolls’ look for memory look was due to her love for movies. The ‘film roll’ look here also sort of represents the movie of her life with her pictures.

Usage of permanent marker here for the ‘film roll’ look is so that it is not permanent and she can erase it if she needs the extra space in the future.

Purpose of gold mirror inside is so that she can the objects inside from all angles. Also it makes the memory loop opaque and the writing space white, so one would not be distracted when writing on it, imagine if it was transparent, it would so distracting and hard to read the words on the memory loop.

It also doesn’t interrupt the viewing of 1 picture, allowing the viewer to view 1 picture at a time.

However, it could have been better if the ball bearing was bigger and the table top would not tilt side to side. The craftsmanship of the product can also be improved, for example, better calculations and measurements, so that the table top is nailed in the centre, the drawers goes all the way in, comes out easier, better pasting of silk and better choice of door knobs and better installation of door knobs.
