Foundation Drawing: Mid-term Assignment (Charcoal on A2 paper)

My Room (Charcoal)

Self-critique

I chose to draw my room, as I wanted to show something personal about myself and to also remind myself of the things I have collected over the years. Through my drawing, I could capture the moment of how my room look like now, so that I could look back at it and reflect a few years from now.

The challenges I set out for myself was to get the background of the buildings outside the window having the right tone and also the details and tones of the shelves which I think I succeeded doing it. however, I also set out to get the proportions and tones right, which I think I did not do as well, as seen from the proportions of the chair and the table, and also the drawer/side table is also too small. The window grill are drawn very haphazardly and messily, as compared to the rest of the objects in the room which are drawn as precisely and detailed as possible, to give off a feeling of neglect since I don’t pay much attention to it and insignificance compared to the rest of the objects in the room, also to give off a feeling of it being worn out and old since it’s the only thing in the room that has been used many times by different owners before me.

If given more time, I would have worked more on the details of my bed, and the overall shadows of the entire drawing, as I find some parts are too dark while others are too light.

Peer Critique

  • The intense darkness of the composition strikes us the most. The contrast of the image is very strong

  • We observe two focal points, the study table, which has a lot of details and the dart board which has a strong contrasting dark tone.

  • It seems contrived due to the way the artist approached the toning and the texture of the walls.

  • The artist seems very focused on getting the dark tones due to the repeated heavy strokes. The artist seemed to linger on the shadows of the cabinet at the mid-bottom of the composition. He also seemed focused on the outside environment. It seems like a challenge to achieve that tone.

  • Window grill could profit from more attention. It lacks details.

  • The composition is very balanced, asymmetrical balance. It keeps the eye moving from left to right.

  • Artist probably tried to challenged himself by trying to depict the outside environment in relation to the elements in the foreground.

  • Moving forward, artist could perhaps challenge himself creating textured shadows by varying strokes

  • Recommended Artist for reference: Frank Miller
