Micro-Project 1-Creating the Third Space

I chose this place as I felt it was something everyone could relate to, because it was the only way out closest to the nearest canteen and convenience store. I felt that it resembles freedom because after a long day of work in school, it’s like a gateway to freedom for all students to relieve themselves of the arduous schoolwork and take a break from school.

The long flight of stairs symbolises the last bit of effort students have to put in to climb it and get out of school which also gives off the idea that you have to work to achieve freedom. As the picture was photographed from the bottom and at night, it symbolises freedom even more, as it shows the point of view of someone climbing up the stairs to get out of school after a long day of school.

The space would change if the photograph was photographed in the morning or afternoon, as it wouldn’t really symbolise freedom that much, as it gives off the idea that it is still very early and there’s still the rest of the day’s work left to do. It would also changed if the photograph was black and white, as the concept would change from an uplifting to a dull one, which could make people wonder if it’s because it’s an endless loop as there’s still tomorrow’s work to be done the next day.

This project relates to Do-It-With-Others (DIWO) as it makes people agree or disagree with the description of the picture. People can also comment on the posts that they have questions about and makes people wonder if there could multiple meanings to a single picture. The presence of participation from others and the artist makes up the artpiece, as the contribution from others sparks off different opinions and discussion and is what makes the artwork the artwork.
