My Story
I want to tell a inspirational story with my linocut and I decide to base it on one of my favorite novel, “The Old Man and the Sea” by Ernest Hemingway, which tells a story of old man and his battle with the sea.
In my version, a young boy living by the sea chance upon a blue whale one day. Awe by the whale’s giant size, the boy decide to spend his life chasing after and catch the whale. Years later, on a stormy night, the “boy” finally found the whale. However, he came to realize the whale is too big and its impossible for him to catch. The “boy”, now an old man, was still satisfied, as even though he failed to catch the whale, the exciting adventure on the sea finding and chasing the whale still provided him with a meaningful journey. What really matter is not the result, but the process.
My Inspiration
My linocut pieces heavily utilise on Gestalt theory and golden ratio.
Golden ratio
When visualizing and designing my linocut, I must understand all these theories and how to utilize them to make something look nice.
