Mark Making(process)

My Mark Making Journey:

Not sure what to bring at first, so here was my tools.

Tools I bring

Marks I made with the tools

I tried to create patterns by using a series of repetitive marks. Which includes green foxtail, flower, snake skin, water ripple, etc.

Run of ideas, so I go around borrowing tools from others.

Tools brought by other classmates

After gathering more tools I tried to create meaning out of the marks I made.

Patterns I made with the new tools, the theme is space and sci-fi. From top, left to right, they are: the solar panel, the sun, the solar system, the space, alien invasion and Planet explosion.

The final 9 piece of pictures I made

1:

The Chinese Ba Gua formed by fishes and sea weed under water. I used lots of curves hoping to create a sense of calmness. Tools used: cotton buds, toothbrush, cake pad.

Inspiration came from the Yin Yang Fish.

2:

The River flows in the bamboo forest. I created this because I likes Chinese painting and Bamboo. Again I used a lot of straight and curve lines to create a sense of calmness. Tools used: chopstick, cotton bud, handkerchief, toothpick, tooth floss, leaves, tree branches.

3:

Sunset view at the Sea. I used textures and tone to separate the sea, the sun and the sky. Tools used: Toothpick, Toothbrush, Coins, handkerchief.

4:

The water Canal, where all ends meet. A drastic change of style from the previous few piece. Was thinking of making some marks without using any tool. So I just spray ink onto the paper and guide the ink to run across the paper by shifting my hands. Tools used: Water and my hand

5:

The world of under water. To create the effect of tones in water(gradual change from light to dark), I paint top of the paper with ink and place it under running water, so the water can carry part of the ink to the lower part of the paper and create the effect. Tools used: fake flowers, leaves, branches, cotton buds
Waiting for my paper to dry

6:

Flower of mimosa, when the wind blow. When people talk about mimosa the first thing they think of is usually the leaves, but their flowers are very beautiful as well. I make use of texture to create the branches and contrast to create the shape of leaves. And since the leaves are not the main “character” here, I leave them white in colour. Tools used: Branches, tassel, leaves
