Colours – Project 3

Value: Enthusiasm

My definition: “an energized and motivated drive to reach desires while not forgetting enjoyment and high spirits along the way.”

Design Element:
This arrow was designed to be made of three triangles and converging lines towards the tip. It conveys the idea of moving towards the direction of the arrow’s tip, showing progress. When the arrow was curved, a slightly different feeling was evoked. From having a stronger and focused stance, the curved arrow looked like it was dancing, and was more positive, creating a sense of fun and enjoyment.

Arrangement:
The element was recreated multiple times in different scale and angles. Then it was placed sparingly to create a patterned design, showing how the element is flowing freely in different directions. As the element is cut off at the edge of the poster, it gives the sense that the design exists beyond the current view.
The text takes up 1/4 of the poster for a more dynamic rule of thirds arrangement. Also, by forming three columns, the text is aligned to the sides of the first column and also only occupies two out of three of of the columns.

Colour Palette:
First, the colours green and yellow were picked for the element. Yellow is more vibrant and positive while green shows determination, drive and growth. Then the colour palette selected is a complementary colour scheme, with the yellow/green against the purple/pink. There is a gradient from light pink inside to purple outside to draw attention to the centre of the poster as our eyes are drawn to the lightest part of the image.

Typeface: Amaranth
This typeface has more personality and is more friendly and inviting. The font visual hierarchy is laid out such that the event name is the largest and has more contrast with the white colour chosen. Then, right below is the event description and call to action. It has the smallest font size with a lighter pink colour (sampled from the pink behind). Last, placed slightly below, with a font size in between the others, is the event information. It uses the same yellow as the visuals above to retain the coherence between different parts of the poster.

Difficulties and Takeaway:
There is a huge variety of work that can be imagined and created. Hence, to the unkeen eye, much trial is done to compare against various viable versions. This can get quite tedious and look about the same after a while.
Overall, this assignment was engaging as we learnt to use Illustrator, colour theory, typography and explored how one can convey messages (i.e. event details) in an efficient visual manner (i.e. basic shape poster).
