HOMEWORK

Tourism in Singapore

Ideas

  • Commercialization of nature
  • Impact of development
  • How development impacts your life?
  • 1 final drawing and 2 sketches explorations
  • Write-up

Sketch 1

I drew a monopoly board because I feel that how Singapore manages its tourism is like how we play monopoly. We have to plan to develop our land strategically due to our limited land and also huge funds are involved into developing such lands. I want to show how Singapore is being manipulated to attract tourists.

Some tourist attractions I drew on the board are like “3-D” as during monopoly, when we “build” houses, we put little chess pieces on the board to indicate it. As seen from the sketch, the Sentosa land is very well-developed, similarly for Marina Bay Sands and Changi Airport.

Techniques used:

  • 1, 2 point persepective
  • Shadows/Tones

Sketch 2

In the foreground, I drew the runway (not very well done because no reference picture 🙁 ) in Changi Airport and the Changi Tower as the mention of “Tourism in Singapore”, the first thing that came to my mind is our world-ranked airport. Singapore’s one and only airport is a place where tourism begins because that is the first thing that tourists will see when they first start their experience in Singapore. And no doubt, the airport never fails to impress the tourists with its magnificent renovation, as well as the airport staffs good services.

In the background is a silhouette of a landscape in Singapore. Included in the landscape are some of our tourist attractions like the Singapore Flyer and Marina Bay Sands hotel. These are put in the background and silhouette because those are the things that tourists will go to during their stay in Singapore. The idea of silhouette came from the beautiful night landscape of Singapore Central Business District.

Techniques used:

  • Tone
  • Perspective
  • Relations (Background, middle ground (airplane) and background)

Final Piece

Extending from the idea in Sketch 1, I decided to portray how tourism have helped to boost Singapore’s economy. Singapore is being manipulated to attract tourists and no doubt, we have done a good job. Tourism is like a form of “business” and we are definitely generating revenue. In my piece, I drew 2 person putting money into the “piggybank”. These 2 person represents the people contributing to the success of our tourism sectors and they are not drawn in details because they worked behind the scenes and their hard works are not really recognized.

Combining with the idea in Sketch 2, I decided to fill up the background with silhouette of our Singapore landscape, separated by a river (supposed to be Singapore River but cannot really tell 🙁 )

Techniques used:

  • Gestures sketches
  • Tones
  • Relations (background and foreground)
  • Material used: charcoal (because I love the effect of drawing with charcoal 🙂 )
