My World – Research & Finalisation

•       MY WORLD

Welcome to my World! This is the marketplace I grew up in. These are the familiar faces I have seen all my life. They made up most of my childhood memories.

There’s the fruit seller uncle, chup chye png uncle, tutu kueh macik and her son. In this series of photos, I aim to capture a still moment of their everyday job routine and the significance they have made to my life thus far.  More than just photographs, we see a familiar bond of friendship, relationship, feelings, and memories. We often take for granted how convenient these people made our lives to be. Craving for rojak? Sure, it’s perhaps just a few steps away. Sick and feeling unwell? Sure, head down and grab some panadol. As technology quickly catches up with time, we are often so caught up with social media and our phones that we forget about HUMAN INTERACTION. I am definitely guilty of this. Remembering once, one of them said “Hi!”, and I simply flashed a pacifying smile and walked away quickly while busying with my device.

Each photo portrays a still moment of their everyday job routine and how it is like. I believe we Singaporean are all familiar with these services as they can be found in almost every neighborhood.

My intention is to capture the happiness and uniqueness of their job regardless how trivial or insignificant it may seem to some. Each job has their purpose and they exist to provide a service to us humans. This project has enabled me to reconnect with these people after all these while.
