HALF- 3D Pandora Box project

I am given the theme ‘ Half ‘. To ‘half ‘ is to make an object symmetrical, and this can be done by using boxes to divide another box in the middle.

Another way to interpret this theme is to use boxes that are of half the volume from each other. Hence I decided to use 3 boxes of 20 cm x 10 cm x 5 cm, 10 cm x 5 cm x 2.5 cm, and 5 cm x 2.5 cm x 1.25 cm respectively for my first 2 ideas.

Below are 2 ideas on how I wish to arrange the boxes:

Pol 1.5

For this model, all 3 D, SD and SO can be seen in 4 out of 5 sides. Not all sides are symmetrical. However, I like the fact that the SO is hanging as it creates an interesting effect. I should try using a transparent SD here while the D and SO can remain opaque. I should also wedge the SD onto D.

Pol 2.0

Piercing is used here.

Pol 2.4

For 3 out of the 4 sides, all 3 D, SD and SO can be seen. All sides have at least a line of symmetry. If the model is balancing on SO, then D will look like it is floating, hence creating a magical effect. Pol 2.2 shows SD as a point when D is the plane, hence allowing viewers to focus their attention on SD.  Perhaps the SD can be of an interesting material here, while the SO can give a touch of magic by being transparent.

Conclusion

Using foams that are half the volume of each other causes them to be of similar sizes. Hence I decided not to use this “halving” method for my next few ideas.

3 out of 4 sides of this model have at least a line of symmetry. If SD is transparent, while SO is opaque, then SO will looks like it is floating.

Pol 4.4

All 4 sides have at least a line of symmetry. Furthermore, this model is interesting as SO looks like it is floating without any support at all.

Conclusion:

I feel that Pol 4.0 is the best model as it is the most interesting. Furthermore, at least a line of symmetry is present in every side, hence it is very suitable for the topic I am given.

As for the materials, I am thinking of using wires for D, so that the SO will look like it is floating. Furthermore, I will make SO striking.

P.S ‘Pol’ means half in Slovenian

Final

‘Just like a bird locked up in a cage, we are confined within the world. But is it such a bad thing? A bird which lived all of its life in a cage can never survive on its own in the wild. Neither can we. What can we do to change this negative connotation of being “caged” by the world?’

This is the concept I thought of while coming up with Pol 4.0 ‘s layout and use of materials.

 Pol 4.0 Layout

I decided to use metal wires for the Dominant so that it will look like a cage. The Subordinate will be red as it is a colour that is striking and hence, attracts the viewer’s attention. The Subdominant will be done using wood, so that it will look sturdy, but at the same time it should look light as well so that the whole structure looks like it is floating.

.

.

Initially, I tried to use wires to make the Dominant from scratch.

It did not end up well. The cage is too hazardous and looks very flimsy.

Hence, I bought a BBQ metal grill to make D instead.

And here is the product I have created:

The red SO is a symbolic representation of the bird. Initially, I planned to have a toy bird submerged in resin, forming the SO. However, it will make the whole structure looks too complicated and the SO will not stand out. Hence, I kept the SO simple as compared to the D and SD.

This model is eventually scraped.

I was so focused on ensuring the length of SD to be 2/3rds of D that I failed to notice that the length of SD is the same as the breath of D.

Furthermore, The placement of the SD do not make the whole product ‘Half’.

Thus, I amended these mistakes and below is the FINAL product.

I decided to shift the thick horizontal bar to the top of D to make it look neater.

Below are the applications of the ‘Caged Bird’ model I have thought of:

Reflection

I felt very restricted as the theme I was given forced me to create models that are aesthetically unappealing. However, I enjoy the process of coming up with a concept for my final model as well as the uses of my model. I look forward to upcoming projects where I can create models that are aesthetically pleasing to the eye.
