DOW – Senses: TIMMi (Finger-worn Textile Input Device)

TIMMi is a prototype for an input device that is meant to be worn on an index finger (not sure if left or right) and can sense bending and button presses in three locations along the sleeve. It has a textile sleeve that covers conductive silicon rubber and stitched with conductive threads. It was built to be able to communicate with smartphones and smartglasses. Where certain gestures like light tapping or bend and tap would effect different functions.

Pros:

  • Wireless interaction with phone or smartglass
  • Multimodal in that one barely has to lift a finger (haha) to make a gesture
  • Easy to gesture especially while busy doing other things
  • Example: running momentum is not broken if a user would want to skip a song

Cons:

  • smartphone input has far risen from simple gestures
  • 3 button and bend input is not easily translated into x,y touch mapping of a smartphone touchscreen
  • technology using population has inherited how to use a touchscreen smartphone, to truncate those gestures for a finger sleeve would create a learning curve.

DOW – IoT: SmartMat (Intelligent Yoga Mat)

The SmartMat is a technologically responsive yoga mat that is able to detect the alignment of one’s yoga pose in real-time and sends this data to a phone application.

The first time a SmartMat is used, it walks the user through a calibration process to personalise feedback in terms of physical shape/size or limitations.

This data is then parsed and corrective or supportive feedback is conveyed to the user via a generated-voice message from the app, which also doubles up as the digital yoga instructor. The SmartMat is paired with an app that also loads guided yoga sessions.

 

Pros:

  • Look and feel indiscriminate from standard yoga mat
  • Technology is mostly hidden and discrete
  • Connected to tablet/phone via Bluetooth: does not require internet connection –> outdoor/portable/easy to set up like regular yoga mat
  • Alignment is determined by x,y position, and angle of rotation
  • Function as a yoga mat is not depleted in order to incorporate tech
  • Tech allows for personalised and remote experience

Cons:

  • Only detects 2 hands and 2 feet placement – poses that are for body?
  • No pressure sensitivity, how to determine an imbalance?

Low Fidelity Prototype

Cold mist on cold glass =/= condensation

Realistically, the glass pane mists up when hot steam condenses on its surface. But is this a realistic project to continue pursuing? Probably not. Perhaps in a controlled room/space/box where the glass is always chilled and the steam is constantly billowing. However, this module is called Interactive Devices, and this requires a device rather than a space.
