LOOKING FORWARD: SUBMISSION PIECE

Concept:

  • Our lives now are very dependant on technology as we rely on many applications to aid us in our daily routine.
  • I would be exploring  on the idea of how we use Yelp for posting scathing reviews on restaurants or places we’ve been to and Tinder to find our ideal curated human interaction and see how it could gel together as a concept.
  • Grab’s cancellation policy whereby users have to pay $5 is also a concept I would be adding as well.

Drawing my inspirations from…

Black Mirror: Hang the DJ // link

Amy and Frank live in a walled-off society where people are required to be matched into romantic relationships.

The relationships come with expiration dates that can be revealed if both partners choose to.

A digital “coach” collects the data from the failed relationship and helps them find their “ultimate compatible other”.

Dark Web: Rate Me // link

Rate Me tells the story of a teen escort with the alias “Coco” through twelve online user reviews.

The reviews ranges from good ones to really horrifying ones, describing each reviewer’s experience with Coco.

Through this reviews, we also see the different personas of Coco and how she reacts with the users.

My Final Outcome

The narrative format of my short film would be similar to that of Dark Web: Rate Me where I had the users or rather friends that got to experience being with my main character to share their experiences in their point of view instead of having my main character narrating. I feel that that was more interesting also to reiterate how we are so caught up with what other people think of us.

At the end of the film, I raised a question for everyone in the present society who are caught up with apps or uses apps to go about their daily human interaction as well as using apps for the sake of convenience, if spending a huge load of money just for the curated experience is worth it.

In my opinion, I believe that throwing money on apps so that I can find the “perfect” friend or companion is not worth it as I feel that it would lose its human touch and basically the novelty of getting to know the person in real life as compared to being matched on an online app. However, as in the film, it would be 100% possible for people in the near future to progress to having to rely on apps as they might just be too busy to make their own friends or they might also lack social skills due  to their dependency on apps.
