EGO- FINAL

And so… Here are my finals!

For all of my works, I make sure that at least one main colours is used in the next panel so that the visuals will flow smoothly.

MS CAT

Medium: Illustrator

Generally a triadic colour scheme is been used. The analogous colours blue, purple and green is complement with the warmer reddish-orange and brown. A dull green colour is used for the background to give a very mundane look, which represents me as a boring individual. The cat mask is highlighted to create focus, as a cat is what I feel portray me best. (introverted, likes to observe people etc etc) As a cat is an integral part of me, removing the mask will remove part of my identity ( hence me being faceless). The use of shadows creating a more 3D effect, and the flowing hair creates movement and asymmetry.

Generally, split complementary colours are used here. The colours here are more vibrant, but the reddish- orange sky makes the whole piece very other-worldly. Purple is used here to create a mysterious vibe. Objects become more pastel and faded the further away they are, to create a sense of depth. While complementary colours are used to create lighting. The  curves ( created by the purple castle and the floating structures) gives movement, hence making the piece looks more dynamic.

I always admire assassins in video games. Not because they kill people, but because they are agile, fast, confident and independent. Like me, they are introverted. Hence, this panel represent the ideal me.

For this panel, monochromatic colours of purple are mainly used, while the analogous colour blue is used for the assassin so that the assassin will not blend in to the background too much (to allow viewers to see the assassin). The same colour scheme for the cat mask in the first panel is used here as well to create consistency. However, the small size of the mask prevents the assassin from stranding out too much. The white space behind the assassin creates contrast, hence allow viewers to focus their eyes on her. A bottom-top view is used to make the assassin look fearless and strong.

MS KOALA

Medium: Photoshop

A koala is what my relative(s) see me as, because I am not very sociable and shy. Complementary colours are used here. The darker and more saturated colour of the clothes allow the koala to stand out more. The use of a light blue sky creates a very dream-like vibe. (which is a style I always love and try to create in all my works) Ms Koala looks very innocent and cute here.

Analogous colours are used here. The blue sky is made darker and more bluish so that the plates can stand out more, and the use of size gives a sense of depth. The plate in the middle is actually off-centre to make the image look less static. The blue sky represent endless plates of food, while the cut-off plates imply that there are more plates than those shown here.

Ms Koala’s mind is overwhelmed by the thought of food!

Split complementary colours are used here. The more saturated green creates a focus point, and the messy layout of the leaves (as opposed to the neat layout of the rest) creates emphasis as well.

MS GERBIL

Medium: Gouache

general colour scheme:

My ADM friends see me as a gerbil as I get nervous easily and jumpy.

Monochrome colours are mainly used here, while the complementary brown colour creates  a focal point. The gerbil’s head is spilt and there seems to be nothing inside. This is to allow viewers to question if there is really anything inside the gerbil ( or me). The uneven splitting of the head creates movement. While the monochromatic blue tones gives a very dull look to the piece, representing me.

I really love space, and to me the stars and planets represent hope and dreams, all waiting to be realised.

Monochromatic colours are used here. The use of black and white creates contrast, and the ‘smoke’ of space not only gives a very dream-like atmosphere, but also makes the whole piece more dynamic.

The endless circle of thoughts and daydreams. When I think of my dreams, and hopes for the future, I tend to think too much about them, and I will keep coming back to those same thoughts countless times. Just like the gerbil running around the black hole (which acts as a hamster wheel), thoughts will constantly go haywire without an end point. The circular shape of the black hole represent eternity, while the black background represent endlessness and the darkness in space.

Mainly complementary colours are used here. The monochromatic blue tones is complemented with the bright yellow and brown tones, providing a focal point to the gerbil and the black hole. The hands help crop the black hole, and creates implied lines that direct the viewers’ attention to the gerbil and the black hole.

MS RED PANDA

Medium: watercolour pencils

Colour scheme:

I feel that I have similar characteristics as a red panda. Hence, I use a red panda to represent me here.

Complementary colours are used here, with the character being coloured with warmer and brighter colours to create focus. The little red panda crawls out of the face, hence representing me revealing my true self. Brighter colours ( as compared to the previous set) are used as I want to try out a more colourful scheme (which is not what I usually use).

I used watercolour pencils instead of normal colour pencils as they give a chalkier texture, which I really like.

Colour scheme:

I chose the worse possible social scenario for this panel: a formal social event. To me, I really do not like social events, hence I decided to portray the people negatively as opposed to the previous panel. I used people in wolf suits; both of which are capable of harming the small herbivorous red panda. The wolves are shown consuming food covered in red (blood maybe?); the red representing danger. The characters here are drawn in a cute demeanour so that they will look seemingly harmless and innocent, though otherwise upon a second glance. This really reflects the people in many social events, who attend these events with an intention to gain benefits for themselves.

Generally, complementary colours of orange and blue, and red and green ( the background colour) are used here. The saturated orange and red represents danger, and the cool blue tones symbolise coldness and professionalism.

Colour scheme:

The red panda tries to hide using a wolf outfit but got found out by the wolves!

The red panda is placed one-third at the edge of the image, and the wolves’ eyes and teeth covers about two-thirds of the whole image. The wolves’ eyes and teeth trap the red panda in a semi-circle shape, and the blue-black colour overwhelms the orange. The brighter and warmer orange, however, still creates emphasis and allows viewers to focus their attention on the red panda. The implied lines formed by the teeth and textured lines also create a focal point.

Generally, complementary colours are used here, and the analogous colours red and orange makes the work more interesting.

REFLECTIONS

Overall, I really enjoy this project, and I am really sad that this is the last project for this semester. I have many difficulties in creating my ideal compositions, but overall, I am generally satisfied with all the pieces! I really learn a lot this round: becoming more proficient at using photoshop and illustrator, and learning how to use gouache, and many other new skills!
