EGO- Process

So we are suppose to come up with ideas for :

Me + A situation = What will I do in that situation

So I came up with several ideas, including one with a koala playing monopoly and winning all the rounds ( which I rejected as doesn’t sound interesting enough ).

Below are my finalised rough ideas for the project.

I decided to explore different types of ways to show portraits, and I got inspired by Miles Johnston’s art.

Like this work:

And so I came up with some portrait styles to make my first panels more interesting:

Next I move on to do more detailed sketches for my 4 sets of equation:

MS CAT

( artist reference: TOM HAUGOMAT)

For the colour scheme, I plan to use a more mundane tone for the first one, and more mysterious tones for the other two panels to show the contrast between reality and fantasy.

I also ended up changing the first panel slightly as I thought of a more interesting method of showing ‘me’.

I decided to draw inspiration on one of Miles Johnston’s art:

Here is my first attempt inspired by his artwork:

I ended up not using his ” wooden face” idea as I find it hard to create a woody texture, and without the texturing, the face looks very plain.

So I decided to make ‘me’ faceless instead:

I ended up changing the colour scheme slightly to make the first panel a bit more interesting.

For my 2nd panel, I drew inspiration from this Tom Haugomat’s artwork:

really like the way he did the foreground, and hence, I used it in my 2nd panel.

As for the third panel, I wanted to make it a bottom up shot so that the panel will look really dramatic and cool.

MS RED PANDA

I chose colour pencils as the medium for this as they are versatile and create nice textures. But I used a bit of ink in the process for the more minute parts of the panels:

I ended up changing the last panel so that the panels will flow more smoothly:

I initially wanted to draw the red panda wearing a rug of wolf skin. However, I changed it into an outfit instead so that the panels will flow better.

My first attempt

I  decided not to use this layout as the wolves eyes doesn’t look very intimidating due to their small size as compared to the red panda in the wolf outfit.

Hence I changed the layout to this:

I also decided to change the 2nd panel slightly as I find it too hard to illustrate the illusion of perspective effectively.

MS GERBIL

I decided to use a realistic style for this.

For this idea, I decided to use gouache:

Since I never use gouache before, I tested it out before I start on the actual piece:

I also ended up using white acrylic paint for dotting.

I ended up with a semi realistic style though but it is okay.

MS KOALA

( Artist reference: FAJAR P DOMINGO)

For these sketches, I was inspired by these works specifically ( all by Fajar P Domingo):

I was also inspired by his use of cloudy skies to create a dream-life atmosphere to his works, as well as his pastel tones.

For the second panel, I made a few attempts to come up with what I want:

I used the ‘open’ sign instead so that it will not be so direct.

But these layouts do not look as impressive as I thought they will be, so I changed the layout for the 2nd panel.

For the third panel, I ended up using the ‘cropped-out leaves’ idea as it seems to illustrate the idea of devouring the food better, and I tried out different methods of cropping:

These are all rejected though and I came up with a more interesting way of portraying the last panel.

I also enhanced the colour of the koala’s shirt to create a better contrast.
