Ego in different setting – WIP 04 (Artist reference)

I feel that I do not really have a distinct art style even after being in animation course for three years. Even though my friend told me that I have a style of my own, I genuinely feel like they are not something that I have turn into mine yet. Perhaps I would say I have not grasps it right yet? Since they vary and changes from time to time.

I generally like arts that incooperates the element of cuteness and scariness together. I feel that it adds to the quirkiness of it. It gives them a more cartoonish type of feeling. One of the examples would be Michael Bisparulz. I really love his art style a lot. The playful feeling he has is being expressed through his art.

I really like the pastel tone he has for his art considering how I am a fan of pastel tone. But I feel like that colours do not represent me as a person since they are so pretty and cute. I do not think of myself as such a sweet and cute person?

Hmmmmm…. Speaking of this one of my friend once told me that when she first saw me, I portrayed the colour of red. Also, the fact that I am a cheerful person but somehow the me on the inside is actually someone who is a deep thinker and feel for people a lot. I was honestly quite shock to hear that considering how have always thought of myself to be quite expressionless. Since I only know how to show happiness and sadness. The rest of my emotions tends to get all jumbled up.

I feel like the style that I actually want to show and use is the me on the outside. The me that I want people to see but the colours that I like and would use is perhaps what I am actually feeling on the inside.

Also, I remembered once that my poly lecturer told me that your art represents and show what you are as a person. You might be doing a design unconsciously but in actual fact it can show what you are actually thinking at that moment and also how we ourselves as a person is.

Somehow I seem to have gone off track, back to artist references! I tend to remember things through colours, perhaps that could be why I am suddenly having so many memory flashbacks. Another style that I really am fond of is the “texture” feeling. The way some artists render their drawings gives the sketchy yet graphic feeling.

As for the colours I feel that I should probably reference them try to pick them out from photos. I could  probably pick different colours for each of the different panels and how I want them to feel, which might in turn lead to the combination of both colours for the outcome of the equations.

Figure in space – General idea

For this assignment, I thought of drawing rhinos after our trip to the zoo. I also thought drawing dogs into the composition. For the environment of what I wanted them to be in I honestly thought of a cityscape. But after thinking some more, I think I might actually try to experiment with the different composition and type of environment that I want them to be in. I will try to in-cooperate a rhino, dog and humans into the illustration. As for the medium, I was actually thinking of using pastels or paint. For the colour, I will be going for gray scale.

I actually tried out some sketches of the rhino and the dog. Perhaps I might use more than one dog in the composition but I thought of just using one rhino for my composition. The dog(s) and the people reacting to the rhino.

For the artist reference, I thought of referencing Van Gogh. I was thinking of trying to go for the surrealism feeling for my artwork. I also really like the patchy feeling he uses for his artworks. Like his famous work the starry night and his self-portraits. I like how his artworks gives off a sort of whimsical feeling to them.

Appearance. – WIP 01 (Research)

For assignment three, I was thinking of portraying being free from modern society standards. But after thinking again, I was not sure of what or how to portray it. The first that actually came to me for this assignment was “Be free. Be you.” Honestly speaking the first that I thought that I could actually get inspiration from is music video. However after what hearing what Mr Robert said in class about not having to depend on the lyrics to show what  I am trying to tell the audience than I thought of advertisements. That fact that They are also about the length of 1-2 minutes, I thought why not trying to get some ideas from there how how I could or should shoot my scenes.

But then I actually came across this short video which was actually pretty interesting to me. Basically, the video is what it is titled. It was a compilation of people breathing in many different scenario. The fact that breathing can actually tell us quite a lot about what someone is actually feeling or doing, from us sighing to even breathing intensely when we are in a state of panic.

To me the thought of freedom is actually something similar. The fact that we could be whoever we want whatever we want to be in this ever changing society. There was recently an advertisement by SK-II where they ask the adults and kids about what is their dreams.

That was when I started realising a lot of things after hearing what the kids said about their dreams. The amount of constraints that society has put on us and the stereotypical judgement we have on people just somehow make people more afraid of showing themselves. I feel like when it comes to freedom there is Adidas and Nike advertisement is perhaps something that I could possibly get some inspiration from while perhaps incooperating the idea from the breathe short film.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CupTwyj3JrI

I especially like this advertisement from Adidas because of the shots use. The way the back view of different people is shown and the fact that even from the back you could clearly see that everyone is different. At the end of the clip, it is clearly you yourself who will be the one shaping your own future, which in turn shows the is what I wanted to try to show in my assignment three. “Be free. Be you.”

So I thought about my 50 words statement that I should write for my film and thought that perhaps it will go like this :

Has the modern day society shaped us into the cookie cutter shaped cookies? The us whom we are afraid of expressing because of the judgement that we are scared of getting. Perhaps we should let “the us” be seen. Maybe it is time to be free and be you.

Ego in different setting – WIP 03 (Me)

Supposedly, we have to do three different equations and another one  which could be similar to either one of the three equation. Like for assignment one, I am trying to think of a feature or a thing that I like where once when my classmates or the people I know sees it, they will immediately think that oh yes! that is indeed Alicia.

So I thought of listing out a few things that represents me:

  1. Food
  2. Flowers
  3. Forgetful
  4. Horror movies
  5. Dogs
  6. Shoes
  7. Laziness
  8. Music
  9. Nature

I guess this are the few things that I thought that represent me or is me. Maybe I would come out something else along the way about me, but I guess all this are good enough. I think I would most probably list out more in the journal.

Equations :

  1. Food + Shoes = Me
  2. Cheerful + Deep thinker = Me
  3. Ideas – Laziness = Better me
  4. Plans – Forgetfulness = Ideal me
  5. Horror movies x marathon = Yes please
  6. Dogs x Flowers = A happy me
  7. Nature x Beach = Dream home
  8. Music x Quiet time = Peace

I guess that would be mainly what I would be trying to execute for this assignment. I have yet to pick the colour that really represent me but I would say it would be either red or yellow. I guess this would be a short post just to  set the idea of what I would like to represent myself with.

Ego in different setting – WIP 02 (Research on idea : PART 1)

After seeing the example of what I could actually do for this assignment, I thought that perhaps I would either go back to doing something similar to the first assignment or I would draw it out. After assignment two, I was dying to draw something. So when I knew that I could do that I was really excited yet relieved for some reason?  Perhaps it was the thought of doing something that I was actually comfortable and familiar with or something that I have interest in unlike assignment two.

Now to thinking about the medium and style, I am not really sure of which medium to go for, whether it is traditional or digital. I am not really confident with using traditional medium but I guess I really should not limit myself considering how 2D is about trying and testing things out. I thought that if I were to by any chance do my work digitally, I should try out out in traditional medium first. Even if I were to do my final work in traditional work, I should try out all the medium. I might actually find something that would be interesting instead of sticking to something that I know for sure work, like what I did for assignment one.

I thought of finding some artist to start off the try-out. I want to find something that screams me. The style could be from something that I like in my daily life, like graphic t-shirts for examples. So I thought of trying out trying out textile designs, which have always intrigue me. I really like repetitive patterns, somehow they calm me down, especially those found on clothes.

I thought of having a specific item appear in all the panel to represent me perhaps? Since I am someone who really like flowers even though I may not seem like it. They are the wonder of nature! I also thought of giving my panels are more illustrated feel, giving it a more edgy look to them.

Some of the textile which I find interesting on Pinterest and perhaps something that I could use as inspirations.

There is already a lot of different type of style from the few examples that I found, from repetition of the same item to having a mixture of the same object/subject in different positions. That was something that I did not thought of but I found interesting. Probably an idea that I will use for the panels.

Ego in different setting – WIP 01 (Colour research)

Honestly speaking when I first read the assignment brief for this particular assignment, I was really excited. I am a person who really likes colours, even though I would say that I am not quite good with them. We have to pick a colour or a few to represent ourselves. But the funny thing is that the colour or rather shade that I like is black, which is not something that I guess I should avoid for this assignment?

So I thought that perhaps finding the meaning of the different harmonies would help me decide on which colour to pick for this assignment.

  1. Monochromes harmony: Using the same colour but of different tones, tints and shade.

Examples :

2. Analogous harmony: colours located adjacent to each other on a colour wheel. Generally with one being the dominant colour, which tends to be a primary or secondary colour, and a tertiary.

3. Analogous harmony warm and cool : Blue, Purple, Green (Cool) Red, Yellow, Orange (Warm)

However the inclusion of too many colours in the art piece using this harmony may ruin the harmony.

Cool colour : Teagan White

Warm colour : Melelel

4. Complementary hues : Colours that are opposite each other on the colour wheel

5. Split complimentary : It uses the two colors adjacent to its complement

After looking through the the different colour harmonies, I would say that I was mainly intrigued by the split commentary hues and the analogous harmony. I feel like I would be able to play and try out the colours more. I guess I would need to see the medium or even the style that I picked for this assignment to decide which harmonies I would actually pick together with the colours.

FORREST GUMP – FINAL

Reflection

Throughout this whole assignment, I thought that it would be something that I would enjoy considering how I am not actually that good in photoshop, Also, how much the fact that I do not like to edit photos considering the pain that I went through in poly. However, to my surprised I actually enjoyed it as much as I did for assignment one. The fact that we did silkscreen was like a whole new experience to me and really such a fun time. I have heard so much about it and attended museum talks and walk through of their silkscreen printing for the artist behind the scenes and all but I never got to try it. For the fact that we are allowed to even try out silkscreen with our own design is really something amazing.

About the photoshop experience, I never thought that I actually enjoyed it thoroughly. The different things that I actually learnt from all the self exploratory. All in all, I would say that I really am learning a lot from 2D lesson but not only that I am really enjoying myself. Being able to express myself to through imagery and all.

FORREST GUMP – WIP 4 (Design)

I had two design ideas for the quote “Have courage and be kind” from Cinderella, 2015. One of which is a deer and a lion head, the other is a lion with the dolphins in the background.

cinderella_edit02

For this composition I thought that dolphins are considered kind and friendly creatures. So I had a lady with a head of the lion to show that she have courage as they are considered as one of the strongest animal. Hence, this composition is to show her exuding kindness despite her being courageous and fierce.

cinderella_edits01

This is the design that I actually pick for the quote but somehow I feel that it is a little too clean cut and lacks the sort of vintage texture feeling to it. So I edited a another one with the texture using halftone and noises. This design has an opposite meaning to the first design. The kind lady actually has a courageous side that is lurking inside of her. Hence, explaining the birds which shows that the courage is actually surging through her.

cinderella_edits02

This is my final design for the first quote with the textures.

The second quote would from finding nemo, 2003 “Just keep swimming, just keep swimming.” For this I only had one design, but I tried editing it again since I was not happy with the idea design ever since I showed it for my transparency printing.

finding_nemo_test_01

At first I thought that the black thick lines passing through the shark looks really plain so I tried to use the same method as the shark, by putting little dots among the back space.

finding_nemo_test01_print

But then I felt that the black lines were really weird with the parts removed and all. It did not felt right to me, and somehow  I felt that it could not tell the quote that I was trying to portray. So I decided to change it again.

findingnemo_edit_02

This is my final design for the quote. I changed it to dory and marlin because throughout the movie, even though there is actually so many other fishes, they are the one that we would actually remember the most. So I used them to show them like swimming with the waves illustrations. The shark and the jellyfish being  one of the few reasons that “forced” them to keep swimming on.

Another quote from the movie would be “I shall call you squishy and you shall be mine.” Even though it is one only one design, I was not really sure of what elements to use for it to be able to portray the quote strongly.

squishy_first-edit

At first I thought of just leaving it but I felt that it was too simple and the fact that dory sorts of blends into the bubble as the tonal value is quite similar. So I decided to try changing some of the values and try out different elements to it. Also, I added the collar to symbolize the jellyfish being Dory’s pet.

squishy_second-edit

I changed the background to black to make the girl more prominent and also added the white stripes to make it look like a jail cell. Since the quote is about Dory wanting to make the baby jellyfish her pet. However, I feel that the white stripes are not that obvious into showing that they represent jail cell.

squishy_4-edit

In the end, I changed it to jellyfishes watching dory as they are actually quite protective of their young ones when they are in danger. But I felt that the background somehow swallowed up the jellyfishes at the back.

squishy_third-edit

So I ended changing the background to white again making them more prominent.

The last quote is from Hunger games, 2012 “I volunteer as tribute.” I originally had two ideas for this quote.

hunger_games_design_test_02

In this design I wanted to show katniss and her “manager” ,for district 12, seem like they are the powerful and in control. Also to show how Katniss has the confidence to win and represent the hunger games in order to protect her sister.

This other one being the one that I pick to print on my tote bag.

print

In this design, I tried to make Katniss look strong and that she is confidence enough to face snow, the villain in this movie. He was the one who created the so-called hunger games. Hence why I wanted to make him look like a figure looming over the city as he takes control of them all.

FORREST GUMP – WIP 3 (Silkscreen & Tote bag)

We had to do our silkscreen in class which was a new and very fun experience for me, as well as going into the dark room and everything. Learning how to expose the silkscreen was a pretty challenging thing considering how we had to properly pour and make it even for it to be able to expose properly. While inside the darkroom with other classmates, the senior told us that it was okay to actually use a single transparency to expose the image. However, it seems like using two pieces is more safer considering how some of the design did not get transferred over as seen from my other classmates.

02

I would say that my printing actually went pretty smoothly, the image was able to come out clearly after the wash. I really enjoyed the wash, the spraying machine made me feel like i am inside some action scene or something. Though i guess the emulsion was kind of washed off at the top right corner, but I could just tape it down with tape to prevent the ink from sipping. Overall I am happy with my first printing of silkscreen. SUCCESS!

20161005_122515

20161005_122509

The next lesson we were then given our tote bag to print on. Everyone was really scared of screwing up the prints on their tote bag, it was really funny. I was just telling to myself “Lets get it over and done with, have trust in yourself and the silkscreen.” Since I was able to get a good result the previous week, I thought it i would be able to proceed straight away to the printing on the tote bag. But sadly when I tried to test print on the newsprint I did not manage to make it as nice as  my first few tries in the previous week.

01

They had this patches of grey in them. I was pretty upset, but then I just kept going over and over again. Washing the silkscreen about 2 – 3 times before the print managed to work. Yeah! Also I realised even though I have a lot of black areas, I only needed a little bit of paint for my prints.

I am finally doing it! The print on the tote bag, it was really a 50/50 since we only have two sides of the tote bag. So I went for it….

20161012_102007

Everything was so perfect! Then I realised the number 12 on Katniss could not be seen, which was one of the key area for my print. I tried it again the second time but it was just the same result. I guess its because of the fact that the tote bag and the newsprint are two very different material. Also the fact that the number 12 is such a small detail.
