Project 3 Ego FINAL

In this project, I’m going to express myself as a cartoonish cat. I feel the lazy cat is similar to my characteristics hahaha. The ideas will say about me but the outcomes are going to be illogical and out of the box. So here are the finals.

1st Idea

In this one, I wanted to show that I’m a person that really enjoys great foods. I like to try all kinds of different foods.

Therefore, the first box shows me (the cat) with its stomach growling and its going to look for food. => It goes to a buffet with lots of variety of food. => There are foods growing out of its head.

Colour Palette

I chose many bright and powerful colours for this idea. They are more of the light saturated colours. It is to show the excitement and happiness of the cat.

2nd Idea

Sometimes when I watch horror movies, I always feel that the ghost seems fake and find it funny.

So, it goes like the cat showing a carefree face.=> Then it went to the cinema to watch horror movies.=>Then it is judging how the ghost looks and imagine itself with the ghosty looks.

Colour Palette

I chose very contrasting colours for this idea. Greyscale and some reddish colours used in order to bring out the scary and shocking feels in it.

3rd Idea

I am always believe in Buddhism and I like to visit places like the temple and such places.

Therefore, it goes like the cat is praying. => It went to the temple. => It transformed into a fortune teller at the temple and its doing some fortune telling for the people.

Colour Palette

Since its related to religion, I chose dull, serious and quiet colours. Not many colours used, only some greyscale tones, brownish and yellowish colours.

4th Idea

I really love animals and and stuff especially fishes and turtles, therefore I came out with this idea.

It shows the cat playing with a koala in the first one. => Then, it goes to the zoo. => It camouflaged itself inside the zoo with all the other animals.

Colour Palette

Vibrant colours chose for the first and second panels to bring out the enthusiasm and passion for the animals.

Simple colours like only green and black are used for the last panel as to show that it is camouflaging.

Project 3 Ego Work In Progress

Working on this project and I tried many mediums for it! Its done with mixed media but overall it all have the watercolour style in it. Its really fun as I got to try watercolour which I never did it for long time. Although its very time consuming but I am quite satisfied with the outcome! Here’s how I do it.

For the 4 panels of ME, I painted them because its easier for me to get what I want to express as myself as a cat.For the Settings panels, I did some mixed media stuff with some effects added and some editing. For the Reaction panels, I used watercolour.

And its almost done~ Stay tuned for my final work! Bye~

Research on Colours

Here are some off my ideas that I have came up with. The colours may have some changes later during the execution.

Going to express ME as a cartoonish cat (favourite animal).

2D Forrest Gump FINAL

Hi here’s my final designs of the selected movie quotes.

1st Quote

For this quote, it makes me think of elements such as warmth and snow. So I used an image of a house in a winter night which gives a calm and warm feel. At the top right, it is a snow globe and inside it is a snowflake. Like the snowflake is trapped inside the globe. Create a contrast of the white snowflake and the black globe. On top of it is crown of Elsa (half-toned) in the movie. I tried to place them off centre to make it not so balanced. Light rays at the top left, half-toned, to leave out some space in the whole design. Half-toned texture makes light rays more gentle. Overall, I tried to make the snowflake the dominant one with all the other elements supporting it.

2nd Quote

Its pretty straight forward. I used elements such as the pixelated snowman, christmas tree, ginger bread man and snowflake. The background is actually a snow texture if you look carefully. Then, there’s a snowflake layer overlay on top of it. There’s a repetition of ginger bread man on top of that. Its pattern is to make it not so uniformed. I tried to play with depth here. The trees below are of different scale and sizes which added in another texture in the composition. The focus is still the snowman and a white shape is used under it to create contrast out of the whole thing.

3rd Quote

Elements such as piano, painting of Chopin and the crystal light were chosen in this composition. The picture of the old piano room was used to provide a variety of things to catch the viewer’s eye. An paper texture is multiplied to create the dusty and aged feel. The paintings are repeated and its almost placed at the 1/3 of the composition. The crystal light is placed in the middle. It is to create a balance in composition and it is more emphasised because of its contrasting brighter colour. Overall, it gives a classical and mysterious feeling.

4th Quote

For this design, elements such as bullet, skull, fire, and bacon were chosen. I tried make the skull the most dominant in the whole composition. Its duplicate and its white silhouette really brings it out. The layer of bacon has a unique texture which adds a different feel. The fire surrounded it gives it a strong emphasis. The spiral at the background act as leading lines and directs the focus point to the skull too. The roll of bullets create a sense of movement in the composition. They were arranged in a flow which gives dynamism to the design. Another giant bullet is placed at the bottom right corner as to play with the sense of distance in it.

2D Forrest Gump Silkscreen Printing

In the past weeks, we had a try on silkscreen printing! I was excited about it as I had never done this before! Here’s what I had done and got my design on the tote bag and T-shirt.

I chose the quote “The cold never bothered me anyway – Elsa 2013” from the movie Frozen.

We printed out the design on transparency paper first.

After the silkscreen is cleaned and dried in the oven, we had to apply the emulsion on both sides of it and let it dry in the oven again for about 20 minutes. Then the transparency paper and the silkscreen were placed together in a machine to get the designs onto it.

Then, we had to go inside a small room with red lights and use the water spryer machine to spray away the excessive emulsion on the silkcreen.

After its done it looks like this.

When its dried and done, it was taped at all sides. The senior said it was to cover up the holes in between.

Ink was added to the silkscreen on the top and it was brushed down with a wooden tool. Below are my test prints on paper. I did plenty of times and overtime it came out a different one! ><

Finally, I tried it on the tote bag itself. Actually i was quite worried but its turns out quite well. It seems easier to print on cloth than on paper.

On T-shirt too!

So that is the entire process of my silkscreen journey~ I was satisfied with what I got. Really learnt a lot from this experience and had fun! Gonna work with the rest of my quote designs!

Foundation 2D Project 2

Hello everyone!

Started on the second 2D project, Forest Gump. We have to think of 4 movie quotes and make up a visual narrative. I have selected quotes from some of the movies that I like. I chose the quotes that are easier to come out with visuals.

1) Frozen (2013)

I really like its animation and the awesome effects. The characters and the environment are very well designed and modeled.

“The cold never bothered me anyway.” -Elsa

“Do you want to build a snowman?” -Olaf

I have tried some explorations and by playing around with contrast, scale and arrangement in Photoshop.

2) Secret (2007)

I love all the music in this movie!!

“Don’t play this in the old piano room.” -Lu Xiaoyu

3) Howl’s Moving Castle (2004)

One of my favorite of Miyazaki’s film.

Final Look

18 Emotions

1.Hope – A feeling of expectation and desire for a particular thing to happen.

This was done with Chinese ink. The small little swirl created gives a feeling of expecting what will happen next.

2.Eagerness – Enthusiasm to do or to have something; keenness.

It consist of 2 tones the light and the dark ones. The harsh and the dark stokes symbolizes the urge inside ourselves to do a specific thing. Its throughout the line which brings out the keenness.

3.Rage – Violent uncontrollable anger.

It was done with 2 layers of Chinese ink and dried brush. The light layer first and the darker layer later on. The strokes are wild and going in all directions. It is getting out of the box to bring out the uncontrollable anger when one is raged.

4.Envy –  A feeling of discontented or resentful longing aroused by someone else’s possessions, qualities, or luck.

The close and dense strokes are like moving into each one of the main components. Giving a feeling of grudging admiration and desire to have something possessed by another.

5.Panic – Sudden uncontrollable fear or anxiety, often causing wildly unthinking behavior.

This was portrayed with the irregular dots that give a feeling of sudden mass and anxiousness over certain things.

6.Frustration – The feeling of being upset or annoyed as a result of being unable to change or achieve something.

It was done with Chinese calligraphy brush. The madness in the strokes represents how a person feels when being frustrated.

7.Fear – An unpleasant emotion caused by the threat of danger, pain, or harm.

This was made by inking the textured paper. The tiny details filling up the line expressed the nervousness when experiencing fear.

8.Distress – Extreme anxiety, sorrow, or pain.

This expressed a feeling of sadness and cannot get out of it. It was done by inking a textured paper and moving it up and down.

9.Guilt – The fact of having committed a specified or implied offence or crime.

The black and intense shapes created a feeling of cannot erase it away from the memory. It was created by using tissue papers. The different suface and the different level of ink on the tissue paper created it.

10.Amazement – A feeling of great surprise or wonder.

It was done with inking a big leave. The way it was spreading out brings out the feeling of surprise.

11.Sorrow – A feeling of deep distress caused by loss, disappointment, or other misfortune suffered by oneself or others.

This was done with monoprint. The rubber was cut and created this texture. Ink was then apply and printed onto paper. It gives a bitter feeling.

12.Surprise – An unexpected or astonishing event, fact, etc.

The way it goes round and round expresses new suprises coming up.

13.Isolation – Cause (a person or place) to be or remain alone or apart from others.

The white space separated the main ball and the others. It created a feeling of loneliness.

14.Passion – Strong and barely controllable emotion.

It was created by cutting the stripes of paper in the middle followed by burning it with the lighter. It symbolizes the strong feeling inside a person is burning out of it.

15.Tenderness – Gentleness and kindness; kindliness.

It was created by cotton wool. It expressed the soft and gentle feeling.

16.Astonishment – Great surprise.

It was done by hitting the brush with force onto the paper. It give a feeling of shocking and out of expectations.

17.Delight – Great pleasure.

It was done with fine black marker. The circles express a feeling of happiness. Its curve gives a mischievous and fun feeling.

18.Love – A strong feeling of affection. Great interest and pleasure in something.

It was done by twisting a flat brush. Those little swirls symbolizes the surprise and new excited feeling of love. The outer lines of the circle are not too clearly defined which gives it a floating feel. It expressed the delight in love.

Thats the end of my Project 1. I feel I have learnt a lot through the exploration and hands on. Anything can express feelings in a way and I feel it is difficult to get the best result that I wanted to achieve and it needs a lot of trial and error. Its a fun project overall.
