Project 3 The Library FINAL: Underground Secret

Fan of 3D Art? Finally done with it in the ADM Library!!

Have you wondered what’s below the library? This project is to introduce a new exciting world in the ADM library that the students are familiar with. It will give a library visitors a break and have an interesting moment. The painting and music combine to give the users a virtual experience and bring out the unlimited imaginations!

Really enjoyed this project even though the printing and installation process were a mess. Will work on this kind of project again if I have the chance in the future~cool

Work in progresssssss

Project 3 The Library Idea Development

From the three ideas that I thought of, I chose to work on the Underground Secret. However, I feel that it’s too ordinary to have another ‘library’ under the library. I wanted to make it more interesting and creative. So, I am thinking to create another mysterious world. It will show a contrast within the library.

I am thinking like a fantasy style with unknown creatures. Maybe that will catch more attention.

Basically, it will be look like this.

It should be in a bigger size probably in A1 so that the people can see clearly. Also, I wanted to add some music effects for the users. It will give the users a stronger virtual experience and feel more ‘inside’ the environment.

4D 2 Library Research

Ideation

In the library, the people there are mainly studying, doing work or sleeping. It was not that packed when I visit it. Less interactions between the people unless they meet some friends. The quiet atmosphere feels relaxed. Did a rough sketch of the library layout.

# Idea 1

Title: Memories Kaleidoscope

Location: Near sofa

Synopsis: In the ADM library, most people are young adults. They may be busy about school life and studying which they are doing everyday. However, this project will bring back their childhood memories for a few seconds. It will make them relax and find the fun times of their childhood.

Description: To create a kaleidoscope and a box. The kaleidoscope will be placed on top of the box. Inside the box, there will be a music player and a earphone. There will be small patterns like small bicycle shapes and others inside while the music will be like grandpa’s voice of teaching how to cycle…(not decided yet)

# Idea 2

Title: Underground Secret

Location: Cement floor

Synopsis: Every ADM student should be familiar with the library. Have you wondered what is below it? It will introduce a new world under the library. Maybe there is an underground library of many rare books. It will bring some fun to the people there.

Description: To create a 3D image with many books.(Michael suggested add in creatures to make it a new world) Probably in A1 size. Paste it on the floor. Maybe use a small frame around it.

# Idea 3

Title: Melting Page

Location: Walls

Synopsis: The habit of reading books has been practiced lesser nowadays. It has been replaced by IT products like people tend to watch movies or play games rather then reading. Therefore, in order to remind people not to throw away this habit, I though of placing the melting page in the library.

Description: To create a long image of a page of a book(content of extinguishing maybe) on top and a picture of black and white liquid below. Paste it on the area of the wall and floor connects.

4D 2 Project 2: Evocative Objects – Trash Talk!

Trash Talk

Group members: Kou Ying, Xuan Fei, Rochele

Finally, we have done Project 2~ We did our demo in ADM level 1, we used the rubbish bins outside the lift. It was really cool as it was actually quite loud and the sounds were very funny as they are a bit exaggerated HAHA.

Here’s what we have done!

My first photo taken with the rubbish bins~

This project changed my views of what is sound art. It has to be very creative and use sounds to give the objects a new meaning and message. I realised the simple objects around us can be very interactive and helps to raise awareness if we add sounds to them. Through the research, I have not only learnt about sound installations but also how different kinds of sensors works. That quite complex for me. Also, sound art is different from other form of arts like a painting or a sculpture. It will tend to attract the people and keep them to stay around the object for a longer time. As it will make them curious and want to find out more about it which is more effective in a way.

We got feedbacks from our teacher and classmates. They feel this project should be placed at the kindergarten as the sounds we used are very animated. Therefore, the young kids will like to play with it and learn from it. Also, I thought we could have do the test video for it in some public places outside the school. Record down the real life reactions of the people using it. That should be fun to do but we did not have enough time to do it though. Maybe we should try out someday.

Overall, its a fun experience and its good to work with Rochelle and Xuan Fei. Looking forward to the final 4D project in the library!

4D 2 Project 2 – Evocative Object Research + Process

After discussing with Michael, we had a clearer view of this project. We should not create the sound track for a video but to install a sound for an object around ADM. Therefore, we came out with other ideas. Like the scary stairs which make use of horror sounds at each step and the talking rubbish bins. In the end, we decided to do the talking rubbish bins which seems more fun and interactive.

It is basically using the normal bins vs the recycling bins. There will be pleasing or annoying sounds coming out from the respective bins. For example, when a can is being thrown into the normal bins, there will be sounds like toilet flushing. It should attract the attention of the people throwing it and make them think of their act. Will it be better if they can categorise the rubbish properly and throw into the recycling bins? We thought it will be pretty interesting if we could do this in the public.

Some of the sounds that we will be using.

However, the difficult part is the technology of presenting this project. When the object is being thrown into the bins, there should be a sensor scanning the moving objects and produce the correct sound for them. We may not really create the sensor but we have to research and understand the meaning of how it works. Then, we could find some ways out.

In the end, we uses a speaker and connect to the phone. During the final day, we will demo it manually. We will have our classmates to try it test it outlaughing

Hopefully, it will work out fine.

4D 2 Project 2: Evocative Object | Research

In this project, we are going to design sounds! Using the objects around us that we see everyday in school. Personally, I really feel sound of a movie is the most important part of all. Without sound, we would not feel the emotions and the scenes come to live. It will be very boring.

I did some research and I saw this video:

They uses simple objects and use their creativity to record the sounds they wanted. I think its pretty interesting.

Another one:

Also, I remembered watching Donald Duck animations when I was young. So my idea is to pick one part of the animation and try to design the sounds in it.

4D 2 Project 1 The Singapore Diary FINAL

Living in the fast paced Singapore, we usually more familiar with high buildings and air-conditioned office. However, every time I walk pass this temple, it always catch my attention and reminds me that I’m reaching home. Therefore, I wanted to explore it as for this project. To understand more about it, about the people that is visiting it, the details and stories of it. This short video wrapped up of my exploration of the place and I would like to share it with you.smile

Open House! Waterloo & Esplanade Trip

This work is at the fifth floor of the building. Actually I did not even notice that it is an artwork at first until someone told me to look inside the hole. I really thought its just some ongoing construction stuff as the green metal container is so common and it really blend in the environment around it. However, after I peeped into the small hole, I was like WOW, ok cool… You really have to take a minute and observe carefully because its quite dark and the images are a bit hard to see. There is a worker’s jumpsuit hanging in the isolated space and some slide show of pictures are playing. There is a fan inside which I did not know why they put it there as it keep making the jumpsuit moving and I cannot see the pictures properly. The label says its titled after an cummings poem which explores loneliness within a city. Then I realise the picture shows a construction worker lying on two plastic chairs. The artist used simple mediums and bring us who is living in this fast paced city to quite down and think about what loneliness mean here. It is a form of communication of the artist through this unique piece of work and I like it a lot. I hope all the people passed by it can stop a while and experience this piece of work.

I was think whats this siren about when Michael was briefing us at the esplanade tunnel. Then after I watch the show and read the description I realise its actually the siren to gather the people in NS to start their training. There are three clips with the guy running up and down at left and right. It is connected in a way. The band performance in the middle. To me, I interpreted it as it the the sone that they sing while training gives them the encouragement and power to persevere through the tough training. I like how the artist uses a few clips to show the distance that he is running. Also the audio gives a more 3D feel like he is really running around. The endless running showed its a long run not only for the body but also mentally. This piece of artwork will definitely bring back some people’s memories of their NS times. The highest level of artwork is to interact with its audience. So I think the artist did it and its a very good way of using the space in the tunnel to create such a interactive art.

Overall, it was an interesting trip to go around and take a look at the places which I do not go often. It was very relaxing and the best is we can get out of the boring classroom and had a fun time outside school!
