Project 2 – Zine (Concept)

So before I went down to Serangoon for the 2nd time, I did some research, Serangoon road is not in Serangoon at all, so at first i was kind of confuse, Serangoon Road is where little india is. So I focus my research on Serangoon garden because Serangoon is very big, (upper serangoon, serangoon north, serangoon central)

So after research, i went down to explore Serangoon garden.

When i was there, HEY! the roofs are indeed red However, most of them are not made using Zinc metal anymore, they were replaced with red tiles.

So I went and do a quick google earth, as you can see the red square is Serangoon garden and on the left is Ang Mo Kio. So I believe red roofs is a unique features in Serangoon. Which leads me to my THEME.

Roofs makes me think of shelter, and shelter represents…

Home. When i was brainstorming on the idea of home, the Chinese character “Jia” came to mind. And very interestingly, the character has a “roof” too. Which is how I came up with this visual representation of my theme.

I drew a very simple diagram to represent. So as I have explained earlier, roofs is my main inspiration for this zine. You have also heard about how roofs relates to home. And I find that the concept of home can be very wide. It can very literal e.g. physical home and houses. At the same time, it is a very abstract concept. What makes a home? Personally and I am sure many others will agree that your family makes a big part of your home. Home is where the family is 🙂

Hence my zine will be split into these 3 sections.

Here are some roof photos I took when i was exploring.

I also chatted with a few people when I was there to ask them about places in Serangoon they always go to and where do they think is the most like “home”. And these are some answers:

Their primary school, Mcdonald’s, community park, playground, Serangoon garden. So maybe I will go find these places then take a photo and do a illustration of the location.

I went to Serangoon on a weekend once and I saw many families hanging out and enjoying a meal together. Some are big families, some are smaller like a mother-daughter pair. But no matter what, they all seem like they are enjoying themselves. Some of these scenes are heartwarming, some could be funny. Which further confirm my idea of home is where the family is. I hope to be able to capture these scenes and add in my own interpretation of what I see.

Here are some photos, maybe I can add my own dialog in the photos.

I will be using illustration and photography for my zinc with minimum text.
