I truly never felt happier and really had so much fun in a project. Don’t get me wrong. Every 2D project has been the most enjoyable for me, but this third one is really an icing on top of an epic chocolate ganache orgasm cake if the semester was a cake. So, for the benefit of Shirley’s marking LOLOL I will consolidate them into one single post, but I really tried my best in documenting this (Cue failed attempt)
Before I go into the WIP, I’ll layout all three columns in details, then follow by the final work.
Column 1 – WHY CLARROT?
Everyone has been asking me this question.
Everywhere on social media, every emails I have ever owned since I was 10. With this particular column, it was the hardest and the most personal.
There’s a lot of internalised self-critique here and there and to present myself beyond my superficial likes and dislikes. It was really hard to dig deep into who and what is a Clara Lim.
I go back to my family, all the time.
Why I’m “Clarrot” is actually super simple, my Grandma, chinese or lowly educated and all, could pronounce my english name so she everytime calls me carrot. So the year came, back in 2005 when Neopets was the shit, I needed an email. So unlike many people who had “pokemon95 / winxclubisthebomb@gmail.com” my sis suggested “Clarrot”. I have been using that ever since.
Other panels are quite direct, my coloured hair, my gaming habits and my sashimi obsession.
Column 2 – Setting
Aiya, this one damn easy. All of my favourite places. Forbidden City, Japan was the first two. The Coffee Shop & Persistence of Memory was a reverse engineering thing. Also in my WIP, I wanted to visit the Singapore Biennale (BUT I HAVENT GOTTEN A CHANCE TO). Salvador Dali was an amazing substitute. Surrealism is my favourite genre.Column 3 – THE OUTCOME
Outcome 1 – Painting Dali’s hair rainbow/oil sleek
Outcome 2 – L4D2 zombies (Tank & Spitter) my favourite characters, I’m considering to have this as my wedding invite. IF only my #5everalone life ends one day
Outcome 3 – Concubine enjoying sashimi with me
Outcome 4 – Memory of my present incorporated in to my Ah-ma’s past /childhood. I got slightly emotional, death is an insane event to deal with.
(I’m sorry I curse too much, but this is really my favourite part of frame 3 HAHAHAHA)
FINAL – the concept
Being surrounded by people who are epic and better than you. You always push yourself to “spoil the market”. NO. Actually. don’t even be in that market, go to a shopping mall, mama shop or even taobao. Everyone has different markets so why spoil them, either ignore them or have fun browsing and enjoying yours.
With that mindset, I really tossed all conceived notion to embrace bad aesthetics.
The colours
Also since young I’ve always loved neon signs in streets of Hong Kong.
However, neon palettes does not exactly fall in specific colour rules, but I tried my best to make up with compound schemes from the Kuler app from adobe you can find them in the Browns and mono-chromatic schemes of the settings as well. The choices are supposed to juxtopose boring, olden, jaded backgrounds especially for the last frame. I wanted people to see that there is a way to merge and collaborate with old and new.
– fluorescent painting benefit when used within a contrasting ambiance of clean, matte-black backgrounds and borders.
– Such a “black out” effect will minimize other awareness, so cultivating the peculiar luminescence of UV fluorescence.
-Both types of paints have exstensive application where artistic lighting effects are desired, particularly in “black box” entertainments and environments such as theaters, bars, shrines, etc.
I’m also very much inspired by the idea of using Risograph Printing and hence my obsession with Neons.

My brain is a mess. Also a struggle I face in class is my attempt to do a lot of things at the same time. In the end, I strayed away from the clean aesthetic I always aspired to have and attempt to inject or explore my personal bad ratchet style.

My intial concept of using Chinese seal was rejected. I guess this is why checking in with your client or in this case your lecturers could be crucial. I was literally spending hours on these freakin seals who didn’t really presented me intuitively. I sort of referenced the collage effect but tone it down abit.
