The Weather Project, representations of the sun and sky dominate the expanse of the Turbine Hall. A fine mist permeates the space, as if creeping in from the environment outside. Throughout the day, the mist accumulates into faint, cloud-like formations, before dissipating across the space. Olafur Eliasson takes this ubiquitous subject as the basis for exploring ideas about experience, mediation and representation.
Installing the huge ‘SUN’ would need a large crane to bring the ‘SUN’ up there. I was at the Turbine Hall in Tate Modern a couple years ago, and the place is huge.
This project reminds me of the time when I was on exchange in Sweden and experienced winter for the first time. I didn’t know that the sun sets as early as 2.30pm in the noon!
LOL if you go far enough north the sun may not even show itself for a couple of weeks! Ask Erik and Kristoffer, their home uni is in Luleå i think..!
It’s really weird how the weather turns on our mood. After almost five years in Luleå, far up in northern Sweden, I can now say that I honestly get why people fall into depression och hibernates during the darkest months. When it comes to human well-being, wonder what the ideal climate is? Doubt it’s the one we experience here in Singapore;) However, a playful and interesting project!
