Purifying lamp

This is a desk top device that assist to create and experience serenity and practise meditation.

The concept derives from prayer wheels. In Tibet, It’s spun to send prayers out into the universe, cleanse the soul.  Prayer wheels are used for meritorious effect such as orally reciting the prayers without reciting the mantra.

Visual metaphors:

  • Light beams coming out from the wheels, portrays it’s purifying you and negative thoughts.
  • Light changes according to the motion of spinning.
  • By turning the wheels, it helps to focus the mind and repeat the mantra. It’s a mind stabilisation technique that trains the mind.

Devices used in this project:

  • Vibration sensor
  • LED strip
  • Arduino

Making the structure. I tried to laser cut the lamp shade but it doesn’t work well. So I cut the wood into pieces and join them by glue.file-19-11-16-2-41-22-pm file-19-11-16-2-39-58-pm file-19-11-16-2-39-45-pm

Themed presentation- Health care

Principles

  • Use technologies to maintain and improve health via the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease, illness, injury, and other physical and mental impairments in human beings.
  • Health care contributes a significant part of a country’s economy.
  • Health care promotes the general physical and mental health and well-being
  • This includes professionals in medicine, psychology, physiotherapy, nursing, dentistry
  • reduce manpower in hospitals.

Case studies

  • Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a long-term disorder of the central nervous system that affects the motor system.
  • Early in the disease, the most obvious are shaking, rigidity, slowness of movement, and difficulty with walking.
  • People with violent tremors often won’t go out to restaurants, or dine with friends, because of their affliction. There’s a loss of independence and dignity because if they do, they’re spilling everywhere. People with tremors won’t go out because it’s embarrassing, and that leads to social isolation.
  • New  technology -Human-centric devices reduce manpower.

Analysis / Critiques or the case studies

  1. A Glove That Helps Parkinson’s Patients Do More With Their Hands

The GyroGlove controls essential hand tremors using the same technology that stabilizes the International Space Station.

  • the GyroGlove, straps gyroscopic stabilizers on the back of a patient’s hand
  • reduce hand tremors by up to 90%.
  • It’s wearable health care device.

2. A Spoon Helps Parkinson’s Patients Feed Themselves

  • Inside every Liftware handle is a number of common motion sensors, the type that you might find in your iPhone or digital camera. Each of these sensors measures motion, then passes it through a small microcontroller that uses custom algorithms to analyze the signal and identify the type of tremor being detected. If the motion has the frequency and amplitude of a large human tremor, the Liftware microprocessor will tell actuators in the handle to adjust the handle’s attachment in the opposite direction of the tremor, hopefully canceling it out.
  • Need to recharge batteries. Not wearable, Only can use it when you are eating.

3. This “wearable robot” helps restore people’s hand functions.

  • The next step / New Trends / Blue sky future
    • From the case studies, people to manage their own health care more conveniently and independently (and inexpensively).
    • Wearable health care devices, small, personalized devices.

  • Assistive technologies are prosthetic devices (e.g. artificial arms or legs) or orthotic devices (e.g., leg braces, shoe inserts). Reduce manpower.

Purifying wheels

People are bearing too much stress in the modern society. The objective is experience serenity and practise meditation.

So I researched on a spiritual object, prayer wheels. In Tibet, It’s spun to send prayers out into the universe, cleanse the soul.  Prayer wheels are used for meritorious effect such as orally reciting the prayers without reciting the mantra.

Objective of my project: a device can help people to exercise meditation and calm down. This project is using cylindrical spinning wheels. Metaphor: By turning the wheels, it helps to focus the mind and repeat the mantra. It’s a mind stabilisation technique that trains the mind.

User will wear an EEG headset. Brainwave is detected and the device will start blinking and showing mixed colour-showing you are not focused yet. When you are more focused, the light will get warmer, and the wheel will start turning. It only rotates when you are in a calm state.

Visualizations:

-Light beams coming out from the wheels, portrays it’s purifying you and negative thoughts.

-Generate sound when the wheel is being turned.

Material use for the mockup: Layers of cardboard to build the cylinder. Scale: a desktop device.

Milestones with a weekly breakdown of tasks to accomplish.

  • 18th Oct -Test on arduino, test on EEG
  • 25th Oct -Prototype
  • 1st Nov -Deliver a cardboard prototype, with necessary sensors and lights
  • 8th Nov -Do the final product and document it.
  • 15th Nov -Do the final product and document it.
  • 18th – Final presentation, the interaction of using the final product will be documented.

Mediated Mirror

If a mirror is the classic interface for experiencing your own presence, what would a technologically-mediated mirror be like that doesn’t let you see your own face? A Kinect tracks the movement of users’ heads, and a Processing sketch triggers the mirror perpendicular to the user to turn via a small servo, obscuring their reflection. The prototype works with multiple users, allowing them to see other faces, but never their own.
