2D II Project 2: Point of View

Point of view. When I received this project brief, I had a very difficult time to choose a main idea/object to work on. And then the idea of staples can to my mind, I’ll challenge myself to work on something that no one really thought of from different point of view and also take for granted for: Dough. Dough is a staple ingredient for the pastries, bread and food we consume yet we never really got around to think much of it.

This is the first point of view:

A Dough from a point of view of a Cookie Monster is a Cookie Sashimi.

Why is this so? A dough, if you think of it is like a raw ingredient; something not cooked/baked as compared to its many end products like a baked bread or a pizza. Similarly, a sashimi is also in its raw form. I choose this because i had a sudden craving for sashimi sushi and this gave me the inspiration for my idea point of view.

Process: I composited images of sushi and a cookie dough pattern together and also made a simple background with japanese chopsticks of my subject matter. I also learnt how to use the brush tool to add shadows and highlight to add dimensionality to the subject matter. This is the process leading up to the end product.

A Dough from the point of view of a Jailbreaker is a key mould.

Process: I started of with having a simple idea for this. I made a composite of a stamp pad with a doughy texture and then added in the key indentation. However, I didn’t like the design of it and I felt that it lack a proper storyline that viewers can relate to. So what I did was add in a silhouetted opened jail cell with a figure of a prison officer lying unconscious inside. Of course, the story of the picture wouldn’t be complete if the silhouette of the jailbreaker isn’t in the frame. So, that was added in. Then, I rescaled the key mould design and adjusted the perspective accordingly and placed it in an obvious part of the composition; together with the duplicated key. The idea of the entire composition is to let the viewer look through the entire image and then getting a sense of the story, and I think I managed to allow for that. I also played with gaussian blur to add depth to the image.

Here’s the final product:

A Dough from the point of view a Hotdog is a warm blanket

For this design, I wanted to play around with the boundaries of the most simple bun, a hot dog. I derived the abovementioned idea subsequently, again because I was thinking of hotdog buns! Then I thought, what can I possibly do with a hotdog bun? That’s when I came up with the idea of a warm blanket.

Process: I clipped mask the creases of a blanket to the dough covering the hotdog and also warped it according to how imagined a blanket to be. I added in a pillow and used a rolling board as the background as a bed so that there’s an ambience of a bed. Again, I played with brush to add dimensionality to the overall image.

A Dough from the point of view of a Rolling Pin is a friend in knead.

I just had to. This was a little tough because the pun was funny but I wasn’t able to visualise the design in my mind. Eventually, I started off working with a rolling pin. Then I had an idea; to make a human figure of dough in a “reaching out for help” position. Of course, a helping hand would complete the whole design. For the human figure, which was fun making, I played with the brush tool to achieve the desired 3-Dimensional look. And I think I have successfully turned a flat piece of dough into a proper form of a human being. Hope you enjoy this playful design!

A Dough from the point of view of a Gingerbread man is an unborn child.

This is also another playful design and my favourite design out of the 6 that I have chosen. I conceptualised this design with the idea that I want to try something new and I’m so glad I did. The idea was a good one and so I had to do justice to it.

Process: I started off with an ultrasound scan image as the basic layer and work around it. With the addition of a gingerbread “baby”, I scaled it an appropriate size and added in shadows and highlights to give dimensionality to it. I applied Threshold to blend the two composites together and added in my own touch to the scan with the alteration of the name of the doctor and healthcare centre. Unborn Child

A Dough from the point of view of a Bread is its younger self.

This was the most fun to make because I tried drawing and making shapes in photoshop for the first time. I never thought I could do it, but I managed to! It was rewarding because the result was how I intended it to be and it’s simple and cute. This composite tells a story of an “old grandpa bread” loving over the field which had a carnival and sees the kids all having fun and then reminisce about his childhood days. This enlightened me, in that, it is always good to try and experiment and do things out of our comfort zone when we are young and able to do so. This is so important, because there will come a time when there’s an end to the things we want to do. With family commitments and an aging body, etc. I hope anyone who sees this image will be inspired to try out things they’ve always wanted to do so. Cheers!
