Project 1a Curating Self

Initially it was really tough thinking about what photos to take for the three task. I didn’t really know what I wanted to shoot or show until I see my classmates’ works. I realised I should just present what really represents me and what makes up of me.

For the first task “Me” I decided to capture my interest and personal preference.

For the second task “Object and Representation of Self” I chose to capture a bear that is given to me by a friend, it is those friends that really makes me myself and allowed me to make the choice of coming to ADM.

For the third task “My World” I took photos of animals around the neighborhood. The reason i picked living things for “My World” instead of a place is because they are the ones that make an indoor person like me to feel that it is really fun to go outdoor.

The composition of all three sets of photos are quite different, for “Me” all three photos are sort of given a frame, to indicate that I am a boring person that likes to stay in order. While for “Object and Representation of Self” and “My World” they are given a more organic composition with a greater variation in angles and depth, to show that even though I am a boring person, things that interest me are really fun and interesting.

For inspirations, I find Lee Friedlander’s work really interesting. Because in his works, he is there but yet he is not there, it sort of tweak the definition of self portrait to me where one have to appear inside the photo.

From this project, I discover a lot about myself, to understand myself from deeper within. And also to recognize myself better. I discover I am a really neat person, I like to organise my stuff. And I really like to photographs animals and cute things much more than humans and scenery. And friends have really become a very great part in my life.

The first row of photos are placed at eye level for easy viewing. Then the task are separated by different rows. The photos are placed from left to right to guide the audience. For “Object and Representation of Self” and “My World” they are placed slightly further away from “Me” because those two focused more on my interest instead of myself.
