OSS: Internet Art and Culture Final Project (Part II)

PART II

Referring to my hyperessay presentation, I did a part 2 of my project to substantiate my initial idea.

This live is about bringing something that normally happens in the first space to the third space. We all know that claw machines operates in physical space and commonly in the arcade. Normally, we would go to the arcade with our friends to have a gathering or in this case, play the claw machines and arcade games. However, what happens if we are too caught up with work and studies but at the same time, we still want to have a short gathering?

Contrary to common beliefs, we always comment that social media/ the internet pulls people apart as shown in part I of my final project. However, if used with the right mindset, the internet can actually bring friends in different places together to meet together in the third space.

Idea Pitch

In my live, me and my friends are too busy with school and are unable to hangout together, it was hard for us to gather together and go out to the arcade together. Hence, we decided to go on to the third space to catch a toy that I have been wanting for a long time. Me in my home clothes and own room also suggest the comfort of the third space anywhere and anytime. The online claw machine application acts almost like a real one, in a sense, it allows the player to see who is viewing the claw act when someone is playing and viewers can give feedbacks at the same time to help the player.

During the live, me and my friends are on the phone such that they will be able to give me real time feedback on how I can catch the toy and at the same time, we can see some passerbys giving feedbacks and opinions on how I should catch the toy. In the end, with the help of my friends and passerbys, I managed to catch the toy that I wanted.

Conclusion

With any online sharing apps, we can make anywhere a third space. Wherever you are online is a space that can be used for connecting with friends, like how commonly we use whatsapp and telegram to get in touch with our friends and family. Literally I can phone my friend anywhere and they can answer in real time with video chat, ready to hang out and socialize with me. Although I may miss the sights and smells of coffee shops or physical shopping malls, but having an online third space is a great alternative. While the internet world should never replace person-to-person interaction and connection but I feel that it is definitely a great way to connect with family and friends who live far away or with whom you have a hard time connecting due to schedules.
