Week 8

While we were brainstorming of methods to create sound from the previous weeks’ concepts, we had pendulums and wind chimes as an instrument.

However, we decided to look deeper into pendulums and wind chimes because we wanted the user to have the experience of touching and seeing of the entire installation.

So we laid out our ideas as such below:

@ Yaaayu's

A little recap for last week:

We started on mock up after we had some idea on how we want the whole installation to look like, we used some plasticine and wire to make our mock up.

We did realize that the mock up do not look close to what we’ve imagined.

Key issues for this mock-up: – Lack of Read more →

be careful! you're going too close to Peter Opsvik’s Garden, it might be considered plagiarism please, try to design something substantially different

Week 10 : Sounds And Spaces

@ Yay cake.

To follow up from last week’s progress, we asked ourselves these questions to further our explorations in the new frontier of proxemics.

What materials are we considering ? How can it be fabricated? Does it require electricity? And if so, how can we generate it sustainably? Foam mockups of the installation? Which locations are we considering? Does it accomodate the scale? Geometric or organic?

We also wanted Read more →

starting from the second proposal, I find it unattractive and a bit claustrophobic. It might me only my opinion but I wouldn't go for it the first one is funny and colorful (and that could generate some good feelings) my only guess is about the candies arrangement, the concentric circles are really necessary? could you explore some other shapes/arrangments
would you like to explore a mediation between the organic shape and the candies: smaller organic items colorful and rearrangeable?

@ kc

feedback from previous weeks:

the circular screen installation proposed does not fit into the site proposed how do you expect people to use the installation? make a specific proposal of the installation

when developing forms and functions for the installation, we were stuck on the idea of having the passerby notice the shadows (forcing it on them). benefit of doubt that the users Read more →

the proposal 1 in the rendering is the most interesting. drop all the others I would suggest to research more on the screen material, is there any interesting/innovative material to propose (thermosomething... photosomething... lightsplitting... ...)

After consultation and discussion, we decided to focus on refining our boat design. We wanted to make the design more unique and site-specific to the lake, instead of one that is commonly seen elsewhere.

Concept Sketch Inspiration & Concept  The main objective of this project wasn't to put a recreational boat on the lake, but rather, to rediscover the Nantah spirit Read more →
well, the excavator to me sounds a bit like a themepark item but...ok, let's see you need to design the boarding platform and all the necessary to contextualize the boats, use lake map to show the location and the size how does it work, two people boarding on one side of the lake and two others on the other side? do they ever meet (apart in the middle of the lake)? I understand is possible for one couple alone to move the system, am I right?
Yes, it is possible for one couple alone to move the system but it will be slower and more difficult. The Nanyang Lake is under construction now so it might be a little hard for us to do further research on the site.

After the feedback, we decided not to elevate the sculpture/seating as it is not feasible. Also, after getting comments on how the previous sculpture looked more rigid and that each module looked exactly the same, we tried to make each seat more organic and they were specifically made individually. Hence, every seat is of different sizes and form.

the simplified bottom flat shape looks ok. Maybe, if you didn't yet, you can explore to create a cavity on the flat sides the link is good, it will keep order between the pieces, how do you want to achieve it? same material or different? the renderings locations are not so exciting (it might be the focal lens) we can try to find some better locations

Further development on Form and Function of Installation

New developments such as the addition of a curved seating, curved shelves, curved ladder and safety railings have been updated in the most recent rendering of our installation. We have also refined on the proportions of the sculptural installation in the renderings for a more accurate depiction of the real thing.

Users are able to sit Read more →

Sorry but the rendering of the shape on site doesn't look very convincing, it's lacking of dynamism (looks very static) and the upper part is proportionally heavier than the lower, giving a sense of unbalance the rail is not aesthetically helping and probably doesn't guarantee any safety, the ladder doesn't look good as well. I would not recommend to propose people climbing on the second level (!) what to do? can you try to re-design, re-proportion the shape? rearranging the square holes in hierarchical progression might help as well do convey some dynamism

@ toiletpaper

As seen above, this is our scale model of the design for the nest, that we have arrived at up till the ideation for week 8. However, there are still improvements to be made. The curved support structure sprouting from the centre feels too engineered, and detracts from the form of a natural bird’s nest. Furthermore, the halo Read more →

It looks better now, ok where do you see it positioned? would you allow greenery on the structure? vines on the ropes...
Thank you for your feedback (: We intend to place the installation outside Centre of Research and Development Office (See Week 8 entry). Yes, we will allow plants and vines to grow on the structure to make it feel more homogeneous with nature.. and bring nature closer to users.

Form exploration II Fiona x Shanelle

This week we are exploring forms that:

Allows the sculpture to swirls around the tree w/o interfering the growth of the tree. How can we improve on the form such that it can be distinguish that it’s inspired by a pangolin. How can we improve on the form such that the end form an Read more →
It looks OK but perhaps it needs stronger presence I suggest you to make it a bit bigger, increasing the scale size in the sitting area and making a longer tail stainless steel frame and wooden scales would be good

” SMELL. “

by

Heng Tong  x  Hong Sheng

After the previous session with Ker Siang, we have set our minds on the direction we are heading towards, which was to collect smell through interaction instead of collecting a specific smell and then amplifying it through our installation.

We finally moved on to ideating and doing some sketches Read more →
