Direction: Using proxemics to create quiet enclaves within public spaces

What is proxemics?

Proxemics—”the study of the spatial requirements of humans and the effects of population density on behavior, communication, and social interaction” (Proxemics 2016)

It could be a linear division, just like the matrix above or it could be a carefully designed installation to provide multiple areas to experience the full Read more →

how do you contextualize such structure? what kind of qualities are you looking for in your place selection? what do you expect the people to behave? sitting and relaxing like the "superfurniture" or forcing into a path like in Serra installation?

In order to better develop the design for the pedal boat, we went to Sports Hub for a field trip to experience the ride.

Below is the image of the boat that we took, which allowed 2 people to pedal at the same time.  The shelter was very simple and it was still very bright and hot when in the boat. Read more →

Hi Profs, After our field trip, we decided that having a pulley system is important to our installation. The boat gets stuck easily along rocks and over uneven seabed. Over at the Sports Hub, they have a team that monitors us and will come to our aid when in trouble. However, having a team stationed at the Nanyang Lake might not be possible. Steering the boat is not very easy and getting it to move straight requires constant adjusting of the rudder. After experiencing the ride, sometimes it is more relaxing to let someone control it to enjoy the scenery. Our rationale of having 2 boats joined on a pulley system is so that students between boats have to communicate - be it to embark, disembark or move. Portraying the essence of our installation, the "Nantah Spirit", at a very important location where it all started. Looking forward to your thoughts!
Ok, I see you had fun with your research. for now I will not comment the pulley motivations but your next step is to proceed with the design. analyze and define the boat features, 2d and 3d drawings, renderings

@ Rachel Fong

After getting feedback on how the sculpture had lost a sense of  “wholeness”  and became more modular and repetitive, lacking the sense of continuity and inter-connectivity, we had to think of ways to make the sculpture repetitive and connected  but not too literal (as of what we did for the previous sculpture). Hence, we decided to explore more Read more →

I can see some progress, good. the elements sticking out on the side look fragile, maybe you can integrate a bit more. please, continue to explore the shape in this direction. what kind of material are you thinking to use? if I can suggest, I would look into ceramics or concrete/ceramics combination

Okay, we will try to integrate the side part and go towards this direction. Thanks for the comment!

@ Eugene Lee

After last week’s consultation, we’ve decided to narrow down our concept to focus on the curved bench idea. Building upon the original concept, we developed a new form for the seating installation.

Here are the issues that were brought up in the previous model: – Exterior design doesn’t feel like a bird nest because it is too neat – Open door design destroys Read more →

ok, this shape start to become more significant what kind of materials are you proposing for the structure, and for the roof? carefully consider the materials since your choice will strongly define the nest design (wood, bamboo, metal...?) one suggestion: the supporting structure (curved pillars) looks too much man-made, too regular, not much as a natural element. can you try to make the curved pillars less conspicuous? maybe thinner sticks will better combine with ropes size ...

@ Eureka!

Having a mechanical installation could best represent NTU as a technological university and having to power the installation using a series of cooperative movements depicts the “Nantah Spirit” and teamwork.

This week, we looked into the technical aspect and forms of the pedal boat.

Technical Aspect

As discussed last week, we will be using two pedal boats to drive a linear pulley system. Read more →

I think the pulley system is too restrictive as a system and as a concept. why we don't want to allow the users to freely move on the lake? you can show good technology and design achivements just designing a good pedal boat! what are the features you want/can implement on that boat?we want to see a precise list and how you think to implement. if you want to use an existing boat structure (easier and more reliable) do a good research of an available model, get all the tech specs and start designing on it.

feedback from last week

consider using textures or 3D forms so shadow is distorted and cast at different angles, playing around with the 3D volumes instead of a flat plane think about the fallen leaves and how to get rid of them; the leaves may make the installation blend in more with the environment and less noticeable to passerby reflective material – Read more →
can you please make a synthesis of your proposal? I cannot see how the round installation would be fitting in the chosen site Where the acrylic colored frame would be located? how do you expect the people will use the installation? Those little PV you fitted on top of the four poles are way too small to collect enough energy to power a such a strong light you expect to cast shadows...and they are so alien from the structure design

Mock-Ups Fiona x Shanelle

Last session’s feedback:

Choose a direction. Overall form not conveyed. Do not use any difficult materials. Be specific about the dimensions, location, the reason behind the location, how people interact with it. Find out where was the Pangolin found and place the sculpture there.

Our reflection:

Going towards direction 1 is boring as it is no longer about making Read more →
I think you need to define better the shape of the structure Is it supposed to be used as a sun shelter? what do you think it can be used for? seats? barbecue? bus? when do you expect the scales moving? are you still interested to make it moving with change of temperature?

@ Yay cake.

Sketches from last week’s presentation.

Moving forward, we decided that we will drop the water feature as it wouldn’t be something feasible in terms of maintainence.

This week we focused on:

Looking for suitable materials that can absorb sound to some degree and would create the feeling of meditative silence we hope to achieve. Exploring a different method of Read more →

Recap from last week!

Last week, we have decided on doing public seating to facilitate more interaction in the Communal Plaza of North Hill Halls. The forms will be inspired by our own interpretation of the trees; Fluidity, Transience & Vitality.

Some feedbacks that we’ve received: > Prototype that we did was too abstract and hard for viewers Read more →

can you please define more precisely your proposal? stop with the charts and start to design please keep in mind that a public art installation should reflect and enhance public space dynamics including as much people as possible (a single seat is not interesting for us) and being able to attract the users. Aesthetic quality is a must

Recollecting our Idea

Inspiration

Our installation is inspired from the meaning of Nan yang; derived from the Southern Sea. We want to develop awareness on the school’s heritage by making reference to the origin of the school’s name, represented by a form that is both fluid and dynamic; combining private and public spaces in a seamless transition in a single installation to encourage people in NTU to interact with the Read more →

The shape representing the tensions between public and intimate space it’s a challenge. The first attempt you’re showing above it’s a good starting point but I think it needs more refinement especially when you associate the grid shelter. If you want to emulate Forners structure’s technique, or something similar, you should consider how the natural tension generated by the double curvature allows the structure to stand.
Agree with Fabrizio that the curvature should be the structure. The gridded shelter feels like it has been 'added on' rather than being designed into the piece of microarchitecture. There is little juxtaposition nor any interesting contrast that is being communicated. If the idea is to have that then there has to be a more interesting way to visually 'arrange' the elements. The black foam model is a good starting point for your work. As discussed with Xin Hong in the studio, you are essentially attempting to 'cut' the space in order to communicate the idea of private and public.
