4D Project 3: Magicleaner

Synopsis

Sammi is more than your average delusional fangirl. One day, she notices a new mysterious cleaner in her school. It appears that the cleaner has some sort of special skill… What will happen when Sammi decides to find out more?

The 6 lines for my group are:

  • What should I do
  • Time is ticking
  • It stinks
  • Maybe
  • What
  • You can try

Reflection

To be honest, I was quite stumped by our lines because they are so vague I don’t really know how to work my way around them. It was a pretty stressful time as everyone was already filming but I still had not came up with a storyline. I was also even more stressed out because I don’t know what genre should I tackle on.

After many days of having a mental breakdown, I set myself down and thought to myself:

“ok, what is your brand?”

I realised I should not get too serious because I will start to overthink and doubt the quality/creativity of my work. (not that my works are sloppy and I don’t put in effort)

Since I usually present things in a casual/light-hearted tone, SLAPSTICK IS THE WAY TO GO! yeah!

Hahaha, and to make things more interesting, I wanted to add in some fantasy/magical elements. And who doesn’t like a twist in the ending? Hope you enjoy the film!

STEAK.

For this assignment, we were given the task of doing a stop motion animation. The only requirement was that the first and last frame has to be a shot of us sleeping, so the theme was practically open for interpretation!

So I was watching cooking tutorials as usual (my form of entertainment), still unsure of what I should do and then, it suddenly hit me:

I CAN BE A STEAK.

When I started to link the different cooking process together, I was SUPER excited that my idea could actually work!!!

(Thus I did not procrastinate till the last minute to do it hahaha)

I wanted my props to have 2D feel, as I wanted my animation to feel cartoonish, conveying it in a light-hearted manner since the idea is so quirky anyway. All of it were made using paper (except for the aluminium foil).

I also added sound effects, both the ‘action’ types and the ‘commentary’ type so that the prepping/cooking process will sound as realistic as possible and that the animation will be even more comical haha.

Storyline

So basically, I’m a piece of meat and the animation shows the prepping and cooking process of making a steak.

It started off with the meat being rested to room temperature, thus the wavy blue lines to represent the cold air emitting from the meat.

It then got transferred to the (wooden) chopping block where seasonings (salt & pepper) and herbs (rosemary) were being added.

Then on a hot pan, the meat was being cooked. Butter was added, and the steak was being seared on all sides. I changed my clothes several times to indicate the colour change in the steak as it was being cooked.

After it was done, the meat is wrapped with aluminium foil to rest so that the meat will not be dry.

And ta-dahhhh! A perfect medium rare steak! (lmao)

SPACE WADDLERS: Journey to the Fluff

Project 1B required us to present a story in 5 images with the characters that we created. I wanted my story to be light-hearted so I came to a conclusion that I should plot my story as a cartoon episode structure!

Thus I drew out all of my characters in 2D style although I photoshopped them to look realistic in the first place.

Another reason is because I’m simply too lazy to edit my characters in a ‘realistic’ way; it will be really difficult to find the right poses for my characters and they would not be able to convey expressions/emotions well. Also, all the backgrounds were also sourced from different cartoons.

Storyline

(Please bear with the cringe-worthy punny/childish names)

This is an episode of Space Waddlers where the trio go off on a journey to help Fluffball save his parents from the evil monster – Leekuid!

scene-1

The episode starts off with the space waddlers chilling as usual, when they were interrupted by Fluffball’s (dramatic) arrival.

Fluffball explained to them that his parents were abducted by Leekuid, an evil spring onion-squid hybrid monster. As his parents were too gentle, they dare not fight back. Therefore, Fluffball had to seek help in rescuing his parents. He managed to secretly escape from Leekuid as his parents got caught.
scene-2

After much pleading from Fluffball, the trio decided to help him and they went on a journey back to the Dragon Castle.

scene-3

Meanwhile, Leekuid was still gloating over his successful victory of capturing the Pompom Dragons. Fluffball’s parents were crying because they thought that they had lost Fluffball forever. And partly because the spring onion leaves used to wrap around them were really stinky hmm.scene-4Luckily for them, the Space Waddlers got to the scene before the Pompom Dragon passed out from the smelliness of the leek. Mr Lizart transformed into Metal mode and used his Rock’N’Roll sound waves to paralyse Leekuid. Bo used his cactus thorns, sending a flood of spikes to attack Leekuid and also shredding the spring onion leaves that were wrapped around Fluffball’s parents. For the final move, Kyary used her psychic powers to send him flying off into space.

scene-5

Leekuid was defeated and the episode ends off with a happy ending! The Pompom Dragon family was reunited and they celebrated with a mini dance party (ft. rare appearance of the Rainbow Cat)

-THE END-

4D Project 1B – waddle waddle

Hey!

So for this week’s assignment, we were suppose to create 3 characters. The characters ended up looking kind of whimsical, so I decided to include all of them in my movie hahaha.

Although I was really rushed, it was a lot of fun playing around and I still tried to put in my best efforts into creating these characters! I know that if I am to produce a movie/show, I wanted it to be light-hearted and comical, which is why I tried to make my characters look as amusing and playful as possible.

For my movie plot, I am still unsure of the whole storyline, but generally, the three friends will embark on an adventure together with an objective (will be decided later). They must work with each other’s differences; or use it to their advantage, and eventually defeat the bad guys and obtain their objective! This sounds like an episode from adventure time/bravest warriors/steven universe/bee and puppycat… BUT I WILL THINK OF AN INTERESTING STORYLINE, YEAH!

-I was channelling kyary pamyu pamyu’s essence into my works-

poster - kyary the duck girl

This is my main character whose name I still have not decided on…

But basically, her character is someone who spaces out and daydreams a lot. Which is why I made her hair as clouds and inserted some outer space elements to show that trait. I also edited her body as a rubber ducky as they float on water, so.. It is to show that she just live her life in a very carefree and optimistic manner, just floating around~

The second character is Bo the flower fox. I just thought that it will be cute if I edited away a fox’s body parts and replaced it with flowers. I think I am going to develop this character as someone who is soft-spoken and gets scared easily, but is also brave to help anyone in need and try to defeat challenges. He is also loyal and kind. Which is why I named him as Bo, the short form of Botan, the Japanese name for Peony, which means ‘Bravery’ in the language of flowers.

The last character is Mr Lizart! He is a gentleman who deeply love music, and carries his cello everywhere with him. Therefore in his name, the letter ‘d’ from ‘lizard’ is replaced with the letter ‘t’ so that it reminds people of Mozart, get it? HAHAHA. I thought it was really funny and smart so.. *coughs* He can play different kinds of genres on his cello, but he mostly prefers metal rock music (don’t judge a classy person on their appearance)

Please do look forward to my work’s progress haha

Project 1A – 21ST CENTURY CHALLENGES

Hello! For our first project in 4D class, we were assigned to create pieces with the techniques – Addition, Subtraction, Substitution, and Superimposing.

I wanted to create meaningful and thoughts-invoking images which was why I was inspired to have a theme of “21st Century problems” for the four images. Although I was quite rushed to create these images, I still had fun in the process of coming up with ideas and creating them! They contain a mixture of both digital and traditional media (collage). I kinda prefer the process of collaging more as I like how artisan it turns out and has more of a personal touch to it. It is also more challenging, in this case my superimpose piece, to figure out the angles and size of the pictures to fit them nicely as a whole image. Overall I am really enjoying this project as you get to experiment with whatever you like and what you wish to portray ^_^

1. Addition: Water Pollution

Optimized-DSC_0054

I compiled images of many different marine lives into a water droplet shape. I wanted to convey the message that water is precious. So many lives depend on even the smallest amount; every drop counts. Especially now that there is water pollution and an increasing decline of freshwater, I want to remind people that we should treasure and use water wisely.

2. Subtraction: Gender Inequality

Optimized-DSC_0050

I printed out a picture of a girl and cut off her mouth. I wanted to convey the message that in many countries, societies are still male-dominated. Especially in third-world countries, many women are still denied access to basic rights and privileges. I want to show that are still women and girls who do not have a voice in the system that they are bored in.

3. Substitution: Keeping Up With Technology

Optimized-DSC_0057

This may actually be quite hard to comprehend at the first glance haha. The problem that I want to address is that although technology is uniting the world and aids a society to progress, we are trying too hard to keep up with it and becoming too reliant on it and it may eventually change our way of thoughts.

Basically, I edited a picture of a person who is piping the filling on the macaron and added my own drawings too. I changed the colour of the filling and added the lines and dots to represent it as the huge technological data and network.

I wanted to convey the message that in this fast paced society, we readily produced new appliances, softwares, interactive medias and as consumers, we also readily accept them. Which is why I put the gadgets – laptop, smartphones, hover board, as the piped out filling on macarons. Macarons are small and easily consumed, much alike to how we consume the technology thrown at us today.

We are constantly trying to keep up with updates. If societies do not manage to keep up, they are deemed are unprogressive and therefore unproductive and weak. Unconsciously, we ‘consumed’ so much technology, that it may be too much in the future, leading to consequences.

4. Superimposing: Rich-Poor Gap

Optimized-DSC_0049

One side of the train track is a rural street in the Philippines, while the other side is a street known for its wealth in England. I wanted to convey the message of rich-gap poverty still persists even if it seems that the rich is ‘helping’ the poor. Actually I was inspired by what I learnt during Art History lecture that in paintings, there is a vanishing point. So although the train tracks look like they will converge in the future, it is not true as it will always be parallel. So although it may look like the wealthy people can easily ‘give’ this financial aid to the poor, the aid given is just like the train tracks, it may seem to be progressing to a point, but in fact, it is not.
