Calendar: Research about Places in Singapore

Standard

Since I want to record places (or just one place due to time constraint) in Singapore in the form of sound and picture, I went to National Heritage Board Website for more comprehensive reference.

I am particularly interested in Sungei Road’s Thieve’s Market as it would be torn down soon due to MRT construction.

I went to the place already and took some videos and photos for reference before I take the real ones for the final submission.

great use of time! you might like this link http://savethesounds.info …. now tell me more. you will record sounds to archive and preserve? you pick a site based on what criteria? and you choose what specifically to record? do you have a system or a scientific approach? or do you respond intuitively to the location? and then how do you plan on sharing and what do you imagine the message might become? explain to me so i can see the methodology and help you sculpt your point of view. very much like the process and the direction!

      Hi Astrid..
      Thank you for the reference!!!
      I will answer your questions:
you will record sounds to archive and preserve?
Yes. I will try to record in many ways: cassette recording (sound), video (moving images and sound), photo, and journal (text). I am thinking of interviewing people also.

you pick a site based on what criteria?
Based on the places that are going to be torn down soon…. So this project is about an effort to preserve a place that is going to be extinct.

and you choose what specifically to record?
So far is walkman (cassette), digital camera, and phone (for sound recording in case my cassette plan does not work, and also for digital archive)

do you have a system or a scientific approach? or do you respond intuitively to the location?
I think I will go with my intuitive.. Have not thought about any scientific approach yet..

and then how do you plan on sharing and what do you imagine the message might become?
Since I want to record in a cassette, I want to make a tiny catalogue that are usually put inside the container.. You know that usually, the band cassette “catalogue” contains their songs’ lyrics?

      example: https://f1.bcbits.com/img/0005148942_10.jpg

But instead, I will put any writings, can be my reflection, interview, or general information about Rochor on the catalogue.

Then, I will also print the photos I took. And maybe a CD of video recording as well.

Finally, every collaterals will be put inside a box named Rochor..

      Conclusion:
What’s inside the box: cassette, cassette catalogue paper, walkman, earphone, CD, printed photos.

Tell me what do you think 🙂
