2D: Pre final Layout and final layout!

Doing this layout was much easier for me as I knew clearly what needed to be changed. The golden section helped me a lot too in deciding how I can balance the frame. I also realised when you turn the golden section and flip it around you can get many layouts that are interesting!

For this, my kerning for the hills bear castles were too much so it looks confusing at where the words ends. Some words didn’t need to be bold too.

This is my final layout.

I’m really satisfied from where I began with my first layout. I see now my mistakes and I can see the mood finally being conveyed well in this layout. I’m really happy!

2D: Progress, Thank God for the GOLDEN SECTION

Because I need help with my layout, I thought that using the golden section could really help me with practising and thinking where I can place my elements. I thought it really helped me out a lot in this project. Thank God for the golden section!

Here I added sketches, as I had planned in my sketchbook before doing layout 1 digitally.

Feedback given was that some pictures were blur and some needed to be changed because it didn’t convey the right kind of mood. I should also try to play a lot more with typography.

2D: Taking Kaleidoscope Pictures!

I was at first kind of nervous trying out this new lens. I was kind of afraid that the lens would make the picture look too overwhelming.

The lens is actually from this glasses that I bought off carousell. It was really perfect as it gave me all the psychedelic colours I needed. I wish though that I could change the colours but that leaves me to explore another time.

This were first few shots. It was really hard to control lighting, the lens and to shift around so that the frame is not overwhelming, with many multiple elements. It was a struggle not to allow the rim of the glasses into the shot as well.

A comparison between with and without the lens.

Here we can see that when a frame has already a complex element, the lens helps to intensify it. The only problem is that, it is hard to make out what the object is. So that is a problem for the zine. I also realise because the lens is made out of glass, the lens tends to reflect back the elements behind me into a picture. May or may not work against me.

When an element is isolated like the first picture, the multiplication is much more toned down and someone can make out what the object is. This way, I had to be very careful of what pictures I took.

It was also interested when I tried to shift around the lens and changed the exposure of the camera. It helped to differ the colours of the picture – something that I wanted so that it would not be so static.

More exploration of the lens

It was also super interesting when I tried it on a set of flower shaped lights on the roof of an old hdb lift..

3d: Assignment 3, CDL

Towards Zero Waste!

Representing the four types of waste in food form is a way to show the world our bad attitude – denial. The four, solid, liquid, hazardous and organic, may seem enticing and innocent to eat but the result of that is death. We deny the harsh facts and we choose to live our lives carelessly as the world dies. If we continue to consume daily innocent products mindlessly, we are directly hurting ourselves and the future generation. We must recognise that. This sculpture, shines a different light on waste – one that is tempting to consume – but in turn shines different light on us; a reflection. It strives to remind people the simple hard truth.

By taking our daily lives as inspration, we as mankind, find it hard to accept the simple hard truth.

The concept starts with us, as people of the world. We forget daily that we need to take care of our home.

Ridiculously huge amounts of rubbish amounted into hills are forgotten, and we choose to fool and distract ourselves with worldly material – eventually causing the death of us. Innocent daily life becomes a sin, till we change it.

What may seemingly be innocent food items, represented into the 4 types of waste(solid, liquid, hazardous, organic), will kill us if we choose to keep eating (consuming) it. We would rather lie to ourselves than to know we are intoxicating ourselves and our future children.

I first started moulding newspaper together into the shapes desired. Then taking strips of more newspaper and glue to smooth out the surface to paint.

3d: Assignment 2 – BOREDOM

In the above picture, shows how two men in Merrifield’s video, were so bored they were so focused in hanging a pile of clothes on a white rack. Taking this concept, we learn that in order to work properly and efficient, we need to be bored for a certain amount of time.

My product will challenge its user to at the calmest state of mind – boredom – while being visually and audibly stimulated.

First I had to figure out a way to make the paper shine inside the goggles like it does on its own. I realised the paper needs to placed in the cup at different angles and light plays an important role. No light, no shine.

I finalised on this square shaped diamond format. Glued them together and supported by tissue paper underneath. Something light that would drag the goggles down.

My initial idea was to more of a glasses format where a thin piece of metal would connect the two plastic cups and the user would use it like spectacles. I realised it was really hard to drill a hole as the whole cup would just break, so I decided to make a pair of goggles from a piece of cloth.

Using my face as reference, I cut out the holes and drew a smaller circle about a cm smaller. When I fit the cups in, it held the cups tightly in place with tension. I sewed the 4 sides of cloth to stop it from fraying.

As for the light, I used LED lights controlled by a switch and powered by batteries. My father helped and taught me with how to link the wires into place. I shouldered the edge of the cup so that the LED light could be glued flushed into the cup. and my final model!

As you can see the word X doesn’t have all 10 words and that’s because X compromises a small percentage in the dictionary and our of those words I could not find 10 relatable words.

I also realised that there are different ways you can interpret each word, figuratively or literally or even a multiple meaning of the word, and this would allow people to be creative with the book.

You can also see below in the picture that the book is not originally black. It was hard to find an empty 260 pages book. What more a hard covered one. So I wrapped the book in black paper which took me two tries but I nailed it in the end.

The final product. I also put in a read me first bookmark to tell the user the brief instructions to how to use the book 🙂

I put the fur coat, a fake one, to make the environment more comfy in a sense? But the location I have put the book in is not so comfortable for the user. As you can see in the picture, Ayesha struggles to sit and write her story down.

Pictionary: Our Storybook from A – Z

  • Proposed Location: – study area –

  • Synopsis: In the library, people usually keep to themselves, avoiding eye contact and not saying hello to each other. I often get curious what these people may be thinking in their heads or what kind of people they are like. With the pictionary, narratives are sought out if and when the person has a backstory to that specific picture. Overtime, a storybook in a format of a pictionary is developed and is open to the public for reading or more writing. In this way, the cold barrier and mystery existing between people in the library is broken down when a part of the person is shared in the book.

  • Description: The book would consist of 10 images of each letter of the alphabet for every page. Each page would have the image on the top and left empty on the bottom for the narratives. Like a pictionary, it would be from A – Z. Images are hand drawn to give it a raw look and pens and markers are provided. The title would be on the cover of the book. “Pictionary: Our Storybook from A – Z”.

  • Sketch:

Proposal

Research and Inspiration:

This task was built in a way where it was self sustaining in a way where people would take any random task from tasks in the box. Once they were done with their own task, they would write a new task and add it to the box and the cycle continues.

Materials were provided and free for use for creativity and fun. I feel that this project task induces human interaction, makes things very open and allows creativity to flow.

My Idea:

In the library, people usually keep to themselves, avoiding eye contact and not saying hello to each other. I often get curious what these people may be thinking in their heads or what kind of people they are like.

Taking the inspiration from Oliver Herring, I propose an installation situated at the study area of ADM Library that gives people a platform to generate conversations amongst them.

I would wrap the table in clear plastic wrap. Providing permanent markers, paint, glitter, tape, playdoh, straws, sticks and other creative materials, I hope to see people start to engage with each other on topics given.

How are the topics given?

Topics are given via pictures to act as prompts. These pictures could be of popular memes, political figures, problems in the world (1st and 3rd world problems), varying from light to heavy hearted topics. These pictures would be distributed randomly on the table.

How do they engage with each other?

They may engage with each other by using their own creativity and by using the materials provided on the table. They may write on the table (covered in clear plastic wrap), model out a figure, even print and add more pictures to the table. They may write down whatever they want with no limits. Over time, this table will be decorated and filled with conversations and would be interesting for viewing.

What does it look like exactly?

After:

What is the objective?

To target the lack of human interaction in the library, I have created an activity where people can engage with each other, digging and revealing thoughts and personalities that are usually kept hidden in locations like the library.
