2d: Confirmed design – undecided

I’m doing on the quote “When will my reflection show who I am inside?

mulan

The KEYWORD is REFLECTION

Reflection can be shown in any shiny surface. Like a mirror or even the water.

In the quote there is some sort of a comparison element involved.

Comparison between what is on the exterior and what is on the interior. In other words, the comparison between the two sides of the character.

Another way to look at it: What if the character WANTS to be who she is inside? Therefore the action of going INTO the mirror to be her other character on the other side.

Example:

Here are several ideas that I might want to confirm with for this quote:

1-reflection

My general idea is to have the two characters almost touching although they are reflections of each other. One character would be trying to get through to the other side. In this case, it would be the lion.

The reason why I chose the peacock and the lion is because I find that just like Mulan, the peacock represents someone who is elegant and gentle while the lion represents the fire that Mulan had in her while she was pretending to be a soldier.

I tried my best to represent the keyword REFLECTION but I think only the fourth one is successful in doing so.

Would appreciate some comments and suggestions to help my designs:)

4d: Final Outcome Assign 1 + Reflection

FINAL OUTCOME

After compiling all my final shots, I came to realise my pictures had something common in each other and came in a pair. There was a common thing as well with my compositions as all of them were in the middle and at least occupied 30% of the picture.

So I did the necessary editing with the colours and tone using the colour lookup LUTs, contrast, played with the curves and also added a fade to all my pictures. I also cropped them to ensure the couples were in the middle and had similar compositions with their partner.

For example,

bar bar-2

Both pictures take place at a bar and involve the couples to seat in a high stool and table setting. I crop them each such that they have similar compositions and occupy the same amount of space.

In some pictures, I also used clone tool to remove people or any distractions in the background to isolate the couple and bring them into focus much better.

Another example,

touch touch-2

Both couples have the girl fixing their significant other’s hair.

As for the presentation, I don’t want the pictures to be pinned up only. I want the way I’m going to display my pictures to be effective of the theme.

Couples often have their “memory box” that contains little objects that would remind and bring them back to that exact moment or day. It’s purpose is to contain the objects we collect to one day, in the future, reminisce about.

This idea brought me to the idea of polaroids. Nowadays couples like to take polaroids together. Maybe because it looks visually attractive. But it is also a snapshot of that exact moment of a good memory and what more that it has instant printing.

So since I unfortunately took all my pictures in a digital format, I decided to sadly fake the polaroids altogether.

I would also like to have a fake memory box set up to present my photos on monday.

REFLECTION

I learnt that with proper research and an idea and a bit of guidance, that I can produce a body of work like this. I have never envisioned the final product to be this way or anything close to this, but I am satisfied with my whole journey and of course my end product. I just wish printing could be better with the colours.

Other than that I also realised that I like to take pictures in square formats and I always have tendency to place everything in the middle. It looks nicer to me. Maybe that is my style. I’m not sure yet.

I also learnt to be more brave in taking risks to get the picture I want and the framing I need. At first I was really scared to lift my camera up and snap a picture. I felt really sad because that snapshot could be THE snapshot and I’ve just let go of a big opportunity just like that.

However, after I forced myself to take my first few pictures, the want for better framing and pictures overcame my fear of getting scolded and I began to feel the rhythm of taking pictures. I even came up of ways to sneak the pictures without being too obvious. It was a fun and successful experience.

Overall, I really enjoyed this assignment and hope to experiment more with photography.
