Zine Final Idea

I felt that my first visit to Queenstown was slightly unsuccessful in terms that I was too focused on the cats. I think I made the mistake of coming to the destination with pre-thought ideas in my head. In that way, I was fitting the ideas onto the place – making it unoriginal to the place.

I was just very fortunate enough to find lots of cats that day. What more when it rained that day when I visited it.

This time, I made sure to take pictures of the environment around me. To really immerse myself in what the town has to give me.

First off, I took pictures of what used to be one of the highest HDB in Singapore – Forfar House. Which I did not go the the first time I came here.

The place was relatively nicer and grander than a normal HDB.

The Queenstown MRT had a very distinct blue which I found very intriguing.

The stairs and hills I needed to climb to get around. It was very tiring and strenuous because I knew if I had climbed down, I would have to climb up again in a few more metres ahead of me. It was also stressful because I was getting tired and I started to strategise my routes and trying to form a map in my head, to find out what connects to what so I don’t walk in circles and I get my pictures.

I find this place specifically interesting. On the first floor u see ground. But on the second floor, you always see ground. And in this picture we see ground on both levels. This is because the building is set on a hill. It is very confusing to me.

The colours, patterns and geometry on the HDB is really interesting.

The winding roads… Can’t wait to photograph more of this circular roads.

These flower shaped hole kept recurring throughout the HDB. I only saw these in advertisements and on other forms of media but I never would have guessed I would meet upon these special holes here. They are truly original to Queenstown.

Finally the cats! These time I fed them cat food… most of them aren’t friendly and are more scared than ever… except the white one! Also less cats were out in the open because it wasn’t raining. But I know most of them are hiding in the drains.

IDEA

For the idea, I felt a bit stuck. Finding that balance between an original idea but still keeping the strong Queenstown identity and yet, trying to stray far from the tourist-y iconic places and features was hard.

To be honest, I left this assignment untouched. I did not even think about it, trusting myself that the idea and inspiration will come when it wants to.  Then it hit me.

An original idea. It comes from me. Something out of honesty. Something I really felt and experienced. The answer was with me all along. I decided to go with the emotions approach and thought a poem would really suit and help me convey the feelings when I was there.

Straightaway I thought of the word “MAZE”. Being in a maze makes u feel lonely, lost, confused, anxious and but still hopeful.

Words like “fantasy” “reality or not reality” “out of the ordinary” “repetition” can be stemmed out from the theme MAZE.

The pictures above are some of my ideas to this fantasy lost world I described as Queenstown where logic does not exist. It had that royalty quality – shininess/the chrome material – but i also feel that it might not speak  out the right message.

This was my inspiration: a music video by Nikki Minaj where she had 3d chrome material/liquid coming out of objects and features in the video. I thought it really suited my idea of the illogical environment and something that confuses the viewer.

Another idea was to do kaleidoscope photography – an idea that will really show the reputation factor. Using a colourful kaleidoscope lens would also help the fantasy Alice in Wonderland vibe.

4d: Final Outcome Assign 1 + Reflection

FINAL OUTCOME

After compiling all my final shots, I came to realise my pictures had something common in each other and came in a pair. There was a common thing as well with my compositions as all of them were in the middle and at least occupied 30% of the picture.

So I did the necessary editing with the colours and tone using the colour lookup LUTs, contrast, played with the curves and also added a fade to all my pictures. I also cropped them to ensure the couples were in the middle and had similar compositions with their partner.

For example,

bar bar-2

Both pictures take place at a bar and involve the couples to seat in a high stool and table setting. I crop them each such that they have similar compositions and occupy the same amount of space.

In some pictures, I also used clone tool to remove people or any distractions in the background to isolate the couple and bring them into focus much better.

Another example,

touch touch-2

Both couples have the girl fixing their significant other’s hair.

As for the presentation, I don’t want the pictures to be pinned up only. I want the way I’m going to display my pictures to be effective of the theme.

Couples often have their “memory box” that contains little objects that would remind and bring them back to that exact moment or day. It’s purpose is to contain the objects we collect to one day, in the future, reminisce about.

This idea brought me to the idea of polaroids. Nowadays couples like to take polaroids together. Maybe because it looks visually attractive. But it is also a snapshot of that exact moment of a good memory and what more that it has instant printing.

So since I unfortunately took all my pictures in a digital format, I decided to sadly fake the polaroids altogether.

I would also like to have a fake memory box set up to present my photos on monday.

REFLECTION

I learnt that with proper research and an idea and a bit of guidance, that I can produce a body of work like this. I have never envisioned the final product to be this way or anything close to this, but I am satisfied with my whole journey and of course my end product. I just wish printing could be better with the colours.

Other than that I also realised that I like to take pictures in square formats and I always have tendency to place everything in the middle. It looks nicer to me. Maybe that is my style. I’m not sure yet.

I also learnt to be more brave in taking risks to get the picture I want and the framing I need. At first I was really scared to lift my camera up and snap a picture. I felt really sad because that snapshot could be THE snapshot and I’ve just let go of a big opportunity just like that.

However, after I forced myself to take my first few pictures, the want for better framing and pictures overcame my fear of getting scolded and I began to feel the rhythm of taking pictures. I even came up of ways to sneak the pictures without being too obvious. It was a fun and successful experience.

Overall, I really enjoyed this assignment and hope to experiment more with photography.

4d: Progress

Below is the link to the pictures that I have chosen to what I think is the best out of all the pictures that I have took so far.

https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B6DUNLbI0svDWlRPa3B1Q0RiV2s

I have taken these pictures mainly on the train, botanical gardens, sentosa, and clarke quay. I shot them strategically in the evening, usually on Fridays and the weekends.

They are all long shots of couples in the moment. I find it easier and effective to do it this way and more natural for the viewer to feel the love of the couple.

I’m still thinking of other places to take more of these photos. So far I have 23 photos that I think are the best out of the bunch.

4d Image and Meaning: Ideas, Research and Approach

Image and Meaning: Ideas, Research and Approach

Project #1: Identify central concerns in my life and develop a body of work

IDEAS

When I saw “central concerns in my life”, I immediately thought of My Religion and My loved ones. It was an easy question to answer as I am naturally a very self-reflecting person. The two I mentioned keeps me in check as person, they help me grow and they are my pillars of support.

Then, the idea of love came to my mind. Love is something we naturally need even as a baby, an adult, till we die, whether we like it or not and whether we admit it or not too.

It reflects on the person we are today. It defines us. It influences our actions and our words. But we don’t notice it. It subconsciously affects us.

In my visual journal, I wrote, that love can be given and received from many places. They are: our family, God, the opposite sex, the same sex, animals, our passions. It may come from a place that I don’t even know an thought of yet, hence, not listed above. The point is love can come from many places and it gives us have a humane quality. Compassion. Empathy. Sympathy.

RESEARCH

After Monday’s class, I felt my topic was too still too broad. In my mind, I had so many ideas of ways I can approach it. It was messy and jumbled up in my head. I need a focus.

I’ve decided to focus on relationships that are romantically involved. It was somehow the most prominent of all ideas. But how do I approach this idea? I wanted something strong. Something that could allow me to tell stories.

These are the artists that I’ve done research on and had given me some inspiration.

#1 Diane Arbus

She’s American Photographer that is famous poignant portraits of individuals on the fringes of society. Fringes of society are unconventional individuals for example street people, transvestites, nudists, carnival performers and many more.

She is controversial with many bizarre and disturbing images that have close distance between photographer and subject that has raw psychological intensity.

There are 3 particular works that I was particularly interested in that might be helpful with this project.

  1. Identical Twins, Roselle, New Jersey 1967

Identical_Twins,_Roselle,_New_Jersey,_1967The picture was taken at a Christmas party. The identical twins were obviously dressed identical. However, one is smiling and the other frowning.

This questions the topic of identity. The twins, even tho came in a pair, were individuals at the same time and that created noticeable tension between the two ideas. They have identical clothing but their expressions strongly emphasise their individuality.

2) Teenage Couple on Hudson Street, NYC 1963

teenage couple in hudson street

This young couple looks oddly middle aged. Their relationship seems intimate from the boy’s arm that was put over his girlfriend’s shoulder. And why are they wearing clothes that are formal and adult looking?

I did some research and found some interpretations. This couple probably grew up on Hudson Street where the photo was taken. During this time many immigrants had settle there after the 2nd World War. It was a disadvantage city. The couple probably were forced to become adults before their time due to the difficult circumstances.

3) A Family on their Lawn one Sunday in Westchester, NY

a-family-on-their-lawn-one-sunday-in-westchester-n-y-1968

There are three things to look at. The Mother, the Father and their child. The picture seems symmetrical, with the pair wearing white and lying on chairs. Similar to the first work I mentioned, the pair have different body languages. The Mother seems relaxed and the Father just the opposite.

It could mean different things but the interpretation I saw was that the picture suggests the 60’s society where men would go for work and the women to stay at home to be housewives.

The kid at the back playing alone tells about the relationship between the kid and his parents which was rather distant.

#2 Martin Schoeller

He is among the foremost portrait photographers. He takes stripped down and tightly framed pictures which allows him to get to the heart of his subjects.

“[With] the close-up you’re in this fortunate position of always walking away with something where nothing else but the person matters.”

Chris Rock - Martin Schoeller Steve Carell - Martin Schoeller Anne Hathaway - Martin Schoeller

#3 Gilles Bensimon

He is famous for fashion photography and helped shaped the magazine that it is today. He does not consider himself an artist but recently he made photographs of fresh cut flowers that are submerged in water.

Watercolour 4 Watercolour 1
Watercolour 2 Watercolour 3

“I realise the flower is something very tragic. When you cut them, they’re dead. But when you put them in water, they start to come alive again. They have a rebirth.”

APPROACH

1a) Diane Arbus gave me an idea to shoot couples on the streets of Singapore.

It could be on the train, in the park, on the bus, at a traffic light. I’d ask them to pose for me.

I could station myself in one place till I find an interesting couple. It’d be portraits of different couples together.

Maybe through their natural body language, their clothing, their expressions and other factors, it would give the photographs character and would suggests stories that the audience can derive on their own terms.

1b) For this approach, I would do in a similar way but online.

Instead of stationing myself, I thought of recruiting interesting people through Instagram or Twitter.

I thought it would be interesting to take tightly framed portraits of coupled with their faces cheek to cheek. Inspired by Martin Schoeller.

However, I would not know where these photos could be taken.

2) This approach would be rather abstract, inspired by Gilles Bensimon.

I would choose a medium so I can represent the complications of love and love itself. I would have to do a mindmap really going in depth of what message I would want to highlight.

Medium is still yet to be thought of.

The quote of Gilles Bensimon saying cut flowers are dead till submerged in water, then they are rebirth, somewhat reminded me of the characteristics of love.

CONCLUSION

For now I am leaning toward approach 1a as it seems to be the strongest. But if there is time, I will try to experiment with the other two. Please do comment on what I should do! 🙂
