NOW YOU SEE ME

Charismatic magician Atlas (Jesse Eisenberg) leads a team of talented illusionists called the Four Horsemen. Atlas and his comrades mesmerize audiences with a pair of amazing magic shows that drain the bank accounts of the corrupt and funnel the money to audience members. A federal agent (Mark Ruffalo) and an Interpol detective (Mélanie Laurent) intend to rein in the Horsemen before their next caper, and they turn to Thaddeus (Morgan Freeman), a famous debunker, for help.

Here Atlas is in the interrogation room after doing a magic trick where big amounts of stolen money from the bank was involved. He says this quote prior to  making smart moves in order to get out of his handcuffs.

HUNGER GAMES

Set in a future North America known as “Panem”, the Capitol selects a boy and a girl between the ages of 12 and 18 from each of the twelve outlying districts to compete in the annual “Hunger Games”, a televised fight-to-the-death. The film is centered around Katniss Everdeen – a 16-year-old girl from District 12, who volunteers for her 12-year-old sister, Prim, when Prim’s name is chosen – and Katniss’s fellow District 12 tribute, Peeta Mellark, with whom she has some rather dramatic history. Katniss is then rushed to the Capitol, where she undergoes intense training before being thrust into the arena to fight to become the victor of the seventy-fourth annual Hunger Games.

Here the Capitol’s President says a quote where he tells his game maker to make his eliminate all “hope” of surviving in the Hunger Games, in order to evoke fear in all his subjects.

mean-girls

MEAN GIRLS

Cady Heron, a homeschooled girl, lived in Africa for 15 years. Entering public school for the first time, she meets the “worst” of her classmates, the Plastics. She joins and eventually gets assimilated into the group of three unkind girls. But she later tries to bring them down.

Here one of the Mean Girls’ mom introduces herself to Cady where she tries to portray herself to be still the “in thing” and suggesting that she still can be relatable to her teenage daughter and friends.

mulan

MULAN

This retelling of the old Chinese folktale is about the story of a young Chinese maiden who learns that her weakened and lame father is to be called up into the army in order to fight the invading Huns. Knowing that he would never survive the rigours of war in his state, she decides to disguise herself and join in his place. Unknown to her, her ancestors are aware of this and to prevent it, they order a tiny disgraced dragon, Mushu to join her in order to force her to abandon her plan. He agrees, but when he meets Mulan, he learns that she cannot be dissuaded and so decides to help her in the perilous times ahead.

Here Mulan questions herself of her identity as she does not feel like who she is inside is portrayed on her outside.

2d: Final Changes + Submission

2-cool-momscreen-shot-2016-10-12-at-11-17-00-am

I’ve received comments about these two designs:

The left one:

I’m not like a *regular* mom, I’m a *cool* mom.

Too many tattoos and they should be executed better.

The right one:

1st rule of magic: Always be the smartest guy in the room.

It is not clear the idea of “smartest”. May be a good idea to make the guy into a scientist(someone smart).

Hence I made the changes:

screen-shot-2016-10-17-at-8-23-49-pm

Lessen the tattoos and made it more obvious that the son and her have matching tattoos. I made the picture more contrast as there were grey tones.

screen-shot-2016-10-17-at-8-23-34-pm

I also put a old fashioned microscope and made the body of the character be seen more. He is wearing a science lab coat.

These are my final images along with my tote bag print and silkscreen:

2d: Printing the Tote

For printing, I decided to use the quote:

When will my reflection show who I am inside?

I decided to use it for my printing because it is most clear in communicating the idea of the quote. I did two attempts, one being smaller than the other. Below are the transparencies:

img_8592

The first printing went well. The fading tone in the reflection also somehow managed to come through. I was happy with it and received good and kind comments from my friends.

img_8505 img_8504

However, some said it may be too small for the tote bag. This is because I did not let the design take up the whole space in the square format.

There was also a problem of using too much ink and I quickly learnt you do not need so much ink to make the print. A little goes a long way.

Too much ink:

img_8593 img_8595

Too little ink:

img_8594 img_8597

Just nice:

img_8596

The second attempt definitely required as it is so much more bigger more ink but again I had to experiment how much ink to use.

Below you can see the transformation from too much ink to too little ink. In the the category where there is too much ink, details are lost in the peacock head.

2d: Cool Mom

I’m not like a “regular” mom, I’m a “cool” mom.

Keywords: Cool, Mom

When I thought of cool, I thought of tattoos, cigarettes….. maybe like a biker mom?

But I realise “cool” is very subjective. The mom could be depicted as a super mom. A mom that can do everything.

Or…she’s delusional thinking she’s excellent at being a mom but in fact she is not? —-> leading to an uncared for child

images baby-scan_pic0250

One picture though, inspired me. The look in her eyes. It is as if she is ready for any task ahead of her but doing it in her style.

vintage-housewife

This gave me an idea to start on:

A mother caring for her child but in her own style. I added tattoos, shades, bandana and a cool hairstyle for her baby. I wanted to add a cigarette somewhere around her fingers or mouth, but the way she is posing doesn’t allow me to.

2d: Magic Smart

1st rule of magic: Always be the smartest guy in the room.

tumblr_mrk4864M8K1r4gu4yo1_500

 KEYWORDS: SMARTEST, MAGIC, GUY

So my idea started of with showing how smart the guy is in creating illusions.

Smartest also brought an icon of a brain and a head.

17-brain-olivia-knapp-cross-hatch-drawings-with-a-bit-of-anatomy-www-designstack-co

500_f_78188314_89wout2olnbaxjdkgblm7wir4rey1zp0

I also found this magician but with a head of a bunny and thought I could do something interesting with it.

1ef916544651d1edd94fb4ca400a9de9

To bring out the magic part, I thought of sourcing out as many magic illusions as I could.

Here are some of my inspirations for magic illusions and how they were done:

IDEA #1

So then I came up with an idea where the bunny magician’s head will be cut open and its brain will fly out. Its brain cut open into half will then spill out all the cool illusions.

screen-shot-2016-10-11-at-10-05-03-pm

I found that the idea is good but the message seems weak and I don’t really like the visual of the magic illusions that much.

IDEA #2

For this Idea I thought of just zooming in into the magician’s head and show a magic illusion that is impossible to do. So I took a head and two hands with no body to show that the head is floating. Then I took a levitating woman’s body. I didn’t complete my design because the photo of the levitating body is just too pixelated and small.

screen-shot-2016-10-11-at-10-14-14-pm

003a

IDEA #4

Revised idea #3 and made it clearer. So I was thinking “impossible”… what if the magician used only his eye power to levitate the the woman? Then it reminded me of this reference below which I referenced in my second artist reference post previously. The artist used white negative space on black background to convey the idea of light shining out.

0045_800 0058_800

I also found some clearer better levitating woman. I also thought that it would be cool to reflect the same idea on the “inside” to the “outside” and put lights shining out of his eyes just like how it is in his brain implying that the magic trick may be ongoing in real time.

screen-shot-2016-10-11-at-10-05-25-pm

PROCESS:

Firstly I took a pic of a cross section of a brain and made it black and white:

screen-shot-2016-10-11-at-10-22-16-pm screen-shot-2016-10-11-at-10-22-34-pm

Then I masked the middle portion where I wanted the magic illusion to be. Since the background was already white it didn’t convey the idea that we are looking into his brain well. So I added a black solid behind the head and it clearly showed the “inside” of his head because the main background is still white.

screen-shot-2016-10-11-at-10-22-54-pm screen-shot-2016-10-11-at-10-23-05-pm

Then I added my magic illusion – magician and levitating woman. Then the shining lights.

2d: Trying to apply design elements

When will my reflection show who I am inside?

4-reflection
5-reflection
6-reflection

Here is a step by step progress of how I tried to be more clearer with my message using disproportion, and symmetry.

Hope. It is the only thing stronger than fear.

06

01 Hand to represent the strength of hope
02 Cut slits
03 And inserted “meat”
04 Black and White
05 Knives to represent FEAR which causes harm
06 Animals that survive represent HOPE
07 But some animals still end up dying.

Final Product:

I think that I have improved in terms of trying to incorporate design elements in my work to make it more interesting and exciting. I also sense a sense of storytelling developing as I do my work.

2d: MORE research

As I was doing my work, I realised I needed more inspiration and guidance to help me get the right look. For the last research I did in my first post didn’t really provide good design reference. For now, I think I’m okay with achieving the vintage/historical look but I need my designs to be more graphical and exciting.

  1. RANDY MORA

randy-mora2 randy-mora4 randy-mora5 randy-mora6 randy-mora7 randy-mora8 randy-mora11 randy-mora12 randy-mora14

Here, I can see that the artist plays a lot with proportion to create a fantasy world. What is meant to be small is big and vice versa.

He also puts repeating lines if he wants to bring focus to somethings. Either that, or the biggest object in the picture is where we’ll look at first. There is great balance and flow to how we look at these images even though there are a lot of things to look at.

That’s what excites me the most about collage. When I face a work made out of diverse elements, I have the urge to get closer and just touch it. While a painting requires a certain distance and a contemplative posture, collage on the other hand, is more an intimate experience, less ceremonial.

2. DAEHYUN KIM

0001_800 0032_800 0045_800 0053_800 0058_800

There is some sort of a storytelling through these pictures. He uses very simple shapes and almost no textures here. Unlike Randy Mora, the design here is very minimalistic. There are disproportion, repetitive lines etc. However, the communication remains clear using composition and negative space. Also, he uses the same character in all the designs.

3. KACIE MILLS

mills_web4 mills_web6 mills_web7 mills_web8 mills_web9

4. MALIKA FAVRE

2_e_malika-favre-_hideseek-e1346134753305 3_e_malika-favre-_hideseek-e1346134773887 4_e_malika-favre-_hideseek-e1346134794454 5_e_malika-favre-_hideseek-e1346134817984 6_e_malika-favre-_hideseek-e1346134840994 7_e_malika-favre-_hideseek-e1346134862147

Actually these are snapshots taken from a video.

I find that the play of lines and negative spaces are endless. You could create illusions and tell a story in such simple technique.

5. LUCIE HARD’IE

lucy-hardie2 lucy-hardie5 lucy-hardie8

In Lucie’s work there is surrealism. The hair of the lady forms the hills. The hair from other lady are the seaweed/coral to form an underwater scene with someone floating in it. The last picture had symmetry although the two ladies are not the same person.

2d: Confirmed design – undecided

I’m doing on the quote “When will my reflection show who I am inside?

mulan

The KEYWORD is REFLECTION

Reflection can be shown in any shiny surface. Like a mirror or even the water.

In the quote there is some sort of a comparison element involved.

Comparison between what is on the exterior and what is on the interior. In other words, the comparison between the two sides of the character.

Another way to look at it: What if the character WANTS to be who she is inside? Therefore the action of going INTO the mirror to be her other character on the other side.

Example:

3140a71000000578-0-image-m-50_1455598547436 1935499-alice-through-the-looking-glass-1

Here are several ideas that I might want to confirm with for this quote:

1-reflection

My general idea is to have the two characters almost touching although they are reflections of each other. One character would be trying to get through to the other side. In this case, it would be the lion.

The reason why I chose the peacock and the lion is because I find that just like Mulan, the peacock represents someone who is elegant and gentle while the lion represents the fire that Mulan had in her while she was pretending to be a soldier.

I tried my best to represent the keyword REFLECTION but I think only the fourth one is successful in doing so.

Would appreciate some comments and suggestions to help my designs:)

General Feedback:

  • Although I have achieved the vintage old look, my designs need to be more exciting.
  • Quotes need to be iconic of the movie.
  • Designs must be reflective of the quote and not the movie, in order to avoid clichés.
  • Find KEYWORDS in quotes and reflect them in my designs.
  • Choose interesting characters to put in my design.
  • Use composition, repetition, scale and other design elements to help communicate the quote visually.

2d: Research & Movie Quotes

MOVIE QUOTES

First I decided on a few movies I know well. I think it would be easier for me to do it because I feel more relatable to the quote/movie. From each movie, I branched out quotes I really like and compiled them.

RESEARCH

  1. Hannah Hoch

4 4612907192 Bride-Hannah-Hoch

Hannah Hoch is a German DADA artist. She did photomontage for her works which is the pasted items are actual photographs, or photographic reproductions pulled from the press and other widely produced media.

I think that photomontage naturally produces a humorous factor because of how awkward the photos are mismatched. Our eyes somehow know what the original picture looks like but when presented mismatched, we feel something is off.

However, because the original form is still there (face still has 2 eyes, 1 nose and 1 mouth) the picture gives meaning & still makes sense at the same time.

2. Surrealism

Digital-surrealism-by-Martin-De-Pasquale-artists-i-lobo-you7 MagCollectivInvention34 s2

Surrealism is a 20th-century avant-garde movement in art and literature which sought to release the creative potential of the unconscious mind.

surreal-drawings-redmer-hoekstra-14 f7ffc95c0ccfed990543d3c369f70030 529572237485525652dc77ee42d9f01d paard surreal-drawings-redmer-hoekstra-10 surreal-drawings-redmer-hoekstra-2

I see that this method has some irony in it. It plays around with what realism and fantasy but manages to produce a meaning and even a story. I feel in some references I have picked out, it brings me into another world where these creatures & beings do exist.

Also, in surrealism, physics we know today & logic are taken out of consideration.

At first glance, some pictures may seem to make sense, but if you look closer you would realise something is off and that it doesn’t exist in this world.

This gives me some ideas on how I can execute my movie quotes!
