My Line Is Emo Trial 1

Today, we start our exploration!

DSC_0082

String makes good splatter marks.

DSC_0083

I think I made a monoprint with the aluminium foil. I think the blotches is quite suitable for Disgust!
DSC_0084

Tried to catch the texture of the paper towel but to no avail 🙁

DSC_0085

Probably tried scratching with aluminium foil, but it is still blotchy!

DSC_0086

Note to self: Using chinese ink for monoprinting WILL cause the paper to stick and tear. Otherwise, still quite an interesting print due to the obvious streak marks.

DSC_0087

Monoprinting with the correct ink this time just to make a black background. Didn’t used the machine though.

DSC_0088

Giving aluminium a second chance with white ink on black background. Verdict: Still messy.

DSC_0089

Moving on to the palette knife! Great tool, spreads paint super effectively.

DSC_0090

Can’t really see here but I made etch marks using the back of a brush.

DSC_0091

Rolling over gently with a little ink. Love the results! Look a little like flare lights? Might consider this for Zest.

DSC_0092

Brush found by the sink also makes a great tool for scratch marks.

DSC_0093

Used the palette knife instead for etching. Great sharp & clean results! Might use this for the old movie feel for Horror.

DSC_0094

Experimented with water on thick goobs of ink. Hmm, still not up to mark but I think I might keep this in view for Disgust!

DSC_0095

Tried one monoprint with straw strings(?). But I don’t know, the distinct contrast between black and white is kind of boring for me. However, the bold lines do make a compelling case. Maybe for Surprise?

DSC_0096

Tried to lift ink out and again, to no avail.

DSC_0097

Brushing white ink onto black! Might consider this to add on for Horror!

DSC_0098

Palette knife white on black. Looks a little Zesty to me.

DSC_0099

Third time lucky! Aluminium white on black still looks splotchy but it feels pretty Nervous to me!

DSC_0114

Trying out another pebble by the sink, but I think its almost the same as aluminium, but not as distinct. Out!

DSC_0115

Cling wrap trial. Probably should have waited longer for a more distinct mark. Nonetheless, not much use for me!

In attempt to imitate this:

DSC_0116

Palette knife smears.

DSC_0117

Wait until ink is slightly set, then use a card to swipe it from side to side. Water the bottom for a reflective feel. Not bad for Sadness!

DSC_0118

Note: Squeegee method works best when ink is not watery but also not sticky. Probably just before it dries completely.

DSC_0119

Another go with palette knife making vertical lines and water. I must say I’m satisfied with this spooky look. Can be added on to Horror hooray!

DSC_0120

Wrap up of today’s work! (First one depicts tragic failure of squeegee art)

DSC_0121

Overall, today was really an eye-opening experience because I have never tried using ink before! However, I couldn’t experiment much because I’m more familiar with watercolour & acrylic paint techniques, and especially when the paper is too thin for heavy water activities. Also, there’s certain techniques that are much more convenient to carry out at home. Nonetheless, this activity has made me much more realistic since I have learnt that certain techniques is not as easy to carry out (e.g. squeegee) and have exposed me to other interesting tools as well!

To wrap up today’s new ideas:

Zest – Etch marks with back of brush before using a rolling pin over. Can consider using palette knife for creating curved lines as well.

Horror – Palette knife etching before using a rolling pin over & static marks made with brush for the background. A line in the middle made with the palette knife via vertical cuts and water to bleed out the ends.

Disgust – Thick, ink goobs with water.

Sadness – Squeegee + water reflections

Surprise – Bold line monoprint

Figured out 1 sketch per page is killing the Earth.

10 min poses each!

DSC_0043_Easy-Resize.com

Tried out facial features with the extra time.

DSC_0044_Easy-Resize.com

Probably need to work more on my hands and feet… yeah.

DSC_0045_Easy-Resize.com

Ended off with a 20 min pose(which I was uninformed of), but I drew it really small so it was done pretty much in 10 min oops! Added fabric details instead.

All in all, it was a really interesting experience! I think I’m more familiar with the body form after this exercise, although smaller details like fingers and toes still need more work. Hope to try a female model next time to practice different gender built.
