Creative Industry Presentation: Joanne Thompson and Ayça Özbank Taşkan

Creative Industry Presentation

My report focuses on two jewelry designers and their studios.

Ayça Özbank Taşkan, who creates wearable pieces that are inspired by architecture and other traditional art forms. Furthermore Joanne Thompson. whose attention to the details and process of her craft is admirable.

Joanne Thompson is an Edinburgh based Jeweler who started her studio in 1995. She received her BA Honors at Edinburgh College of Arts and her Masters at the Royal College of Art. The majority of her jewelry pieces utilize the Ancient Chain Maille Patterns to create are three-dimensional structures in either silver or oxidized silver.

Joanne Thompson’s pieces are characterized by their extraordinarily lightweight, versatile, and easy to wear configuration. The almost ethereal fluidity of her designs and the use of oxidized silver emits a playful sensuality. Upon research, I discovered her genuine dedication to the practice of personally designing, making, and quality checking each piece. My respect for her lies not only in her work ethic but also skill as a jewelry designer.

“Mara Paris” was started by Istanbul born architect turned jeweler Ayça Özbank Taşkan. Her nomadic lifestyle comes from her belief that cultures, art, and design are unique to each city and can offer her an unparalleled experience. Henceforth her approach to her designers are inspired by a multitude of factors and experiences.

Ayça Özbank Taşkan’s pieces contain a unique visual design and an unorthodox off-balanced arrangement. This arrangement is achieved by mixing and matching pieces or curating a single piece. Her jewelry pieces morph into the wearer by following the contours of the human form while create its shapes.

Ayça Özbank Taşkan’s playful yet graceful designs and similarity in mindset; Joanne Thompson’s skills as a craftsman and the sculptural structure of her pieces are the inspired this reports conception.
