Research critique: Jennicam

“I’m trying to prove the point that no matter what you look like, you’re still just as interesting as people on the TV or in the magazines.”

During the interview with David Letterman, Jenny brought up something interesting: the fact that there is a whole lot of things to watch on television. The fact that users still tune in to watch someone else’s apartment tells us a little bit more about our voyeuristic tendencies, and our curiosity to consume media of this sort, even though there isn’t really anything inherently interesting on an average day.

From a personal perspective, there isn’t a lot that I do outside of my computer when I am at home, so if i were to broadcast myself, i would tend to do it via OBS or Facebook live.

This experiment also reminded me of a similar project that i saw a couple of years ago, in which a man would take a portrait photographs of himself over a period of 6 years. I dabbled in this idea myself, and even tried out some self portrait stop motion animation just to see how effective it was. I preferred this project as most of the photographs exist without context, something that I’d much rather do in comparison to streaming my house. In fact, Jennifer’s early streams were simply black and white images uploaded in 3 minute increments.

I also believe that teaching internet etiquette and responsible internet use should be included as part of the curriculum as there have been instances of people getting into trouble online for something that was taken out of context. Pewdiepie had recently gotten into trouble for using the N word on one of his live streams. Although it was obvious that the word was uttered in the heat of the moment, the court of public opinion was unwilling to read between the lines, and was quick to grab the proverbial pitchfork. (here is his public apology).

There was another incident involving a Youtuber/ streamer by the username DSPgaming (there’s an encyclopedia dramatica page dedicated to this man). Basically, Phillip Burnell is a let’s player who streams himself playing video games. Unfortunately, during one of his streams, he somehow forgot to switch his camera off after the show, and proceeded to, shall we say, shine his saber. This act was caught on the stream, leading to his ridicule. Incidents like these are permanently on the public domain (Thanks to sites like the wayback machine), and although some like Phil are simply ridiculed, there are others who has had their reputations affected (Pewdiepie fiverr incident) and others who had been arrested (Amos Yee)

The rules of engagement in this scenario would be to play it cool and just “own it ” so to speak . The amazing atheist a.k.a. TJ kirk did it right by plainly admitting his transgressions when it was leaked online. However, Phillip on the other hand, did the exact opposite thing and tried to deny it awkwardly, leading to more ridicule.

In the case of Jennifer Ringley, she ran into a different set  of problems. It all began when she had volunteered to do a striptease on the stream. This continued until she was hacked and sent death threats, telling her to “show more”. Thankfully, she was able to take control of the situation and laugh it off. I’m not sure if this generation of children will be as thick-skinned as she was.

In conclusion, I believe that in this age of moral indignation, self-righteousness and virtue signalling, streamers and other online personalities would have to be extra careful about what they say online, especially for streamers and those hosting podcasts, as the latter instances are almost always impromptu and unrehearsed.

Reflections on the shared broadcasting

Posted by Anam Musta'ein on Thursday, 12 October 2017

This session of the shared broadcasting worked out much better than in OSS, so I was able to do a little bit more. However, I noticed that in both this instance and in the first ever Facebook broadcast, I was unable to speak coherently without having the urge and compulsion to check if the broadcast was working, or if I was broadcasting anything that would be shady. I also refrained from talking a little as my mind kept switching back to the real world, and I was getting a little more conscious about how other people would perceive me if they saw me laughing to myself and talking to an inanimate object. (they wouldn’t know the context of the broadcast)

Upon returning back to school, I met back up with Anam, and noticed that there were some sound feedback looping, but the thing that intrigued me more was the idea of arranging both camera phones back to back and showing a front and back view of the scene as a panorama. Another idea would be to use a couple of mirrors to create a kaleidoscope effect. ( Facebook live might have a couple of filters which may allow this to happen.)

The last idea would be to blindfold someone with a makeshift “VR headset ” and broadcast the person in third person view. The idea is to have someone be disconnected from his own self.

For this to work, a third camera phone would be needed. This camera, which would be mounted on the person’s VR headset would not be broadcasting anything, but would be watching someone else’s broadcast. Both broadcasters would then be walking around with their camera, constantly changing their vantage points so as to disorientate the user. A lot of preparation would be needed for this to work.

Material wise, all I would need are a couple of cardboard pieces, some duct tape, and an elastic band.

Thie headset wouldn’t technically be an actual VR headset as it doesn’t use a pair of lenses, and it wouldn’t need to, since virtual reality headsets warp the imagery for immersion purposes, and are used primarily to see things in a first person perspective.

My experiences eloquently expressed are already alienating average audiences online. As I systematically started streaming solemn stuff sardonically, I pondered upon partaking in petty  pandering practices, particularly in putting pretty pictures that are politically pleasant, whilst putting potato pieces in patiently.

Thus, came the floating feline from afar, freeing fears of Facebook feverishly foraging familiar forgeries to fraudulently forfeit.

Lately, LAN latency lagged like a Londoner lamenting logging. Leaving little to like as always, also, enacting ornaments as an aspect of overall oeuvres ain’t entirely enticing as existing editing aspects of images aren’t easy.

Maybe Minecaft might mitigate many migraine-making measures measurably.

The concept of recursive flow is interesting, incorporating the concepts of fractal art and procedural generation to give an illusion of an infinite dimension. Perception of space and time are no longer limited to a countable or definable unit, but is instead measured in terms of current spacial orientation. This model may be used as a teaching aid to explain the expansion and spacial orientation of our universe itself, and how we’re limited by the particle horizon.

Alternatively, this algorithmic expression has been used to create the illusion of life in games like “fuel” and “no man’s sky”. However, we’ve evolved to see the seams in the works, noting repetition. The alternative would be the use of brute force customization like mega-texturing, or the implementation of artificial intelligence based designing through approximations on pre-existing models. Though its use in recent history has been faced with much controversy among purists.

#1: Here we have a special individual from the guardian give his important opinion about AI art.

#2: Another example of AI art. This time, a track made by the Sony CSL research Laboratory.

Moving on, we’re seeing an increased use of glitch in performative art, with musicians such as Ryoji Ikeda and Mika Vainio and video games such as “memory of a broken dimension.” Though exciting to me, I feel that the novelty of it will wear off, as it did with 3d stereoscopic projection and virtual reality headsets. In both cases, the existing technology haven’t been proven to be financially viable to the general public. As with vr being limited to entertainment, there is a likelihood that glitch art would be confined to the niche performance art sector, until another great leap is made.

As for the videogame “memory of a broken dimension” the glitch art was but a small aspect of the overall experience. The central core mechanic of the game was about non-euclidean spacial awareness, and puzzle solving skills.

Upon reading the following article, i was intrigued, not so much by the performative aspects of the exhibition, but at the fact that the “virtual space” could very well be the answer to further facilitate cultural preservation. We’re living in an ever fatalistic world which claims that diversity is our strength, yet cultural homogeneity and has been proven to promote economic performance and social cohesion.

The Mcgill university from canada actually ran a simulation which favours Ethnocentrism over humanitarianism, with categorization-elaboration models showing a limit to group performance as diversity is increased to higher levels.

Another policy analyst by the name of Roy Beck also confirms this, stating that the importation of 1 million immigrants on average since 1990 did little to alleviate worldwide poverty. In fact, the act of doing so actually harms the country’s ability to elevate past the third world categorization, because the future of their country had chosen to leave.

Fortunately, the creation of the world wide web, and the increasing pool of online information has been one major game changer, with cyber cafes opening a new world of information to the general public, allowing themselves to educate themselves. The most recent example, dubbed  the “virtual space” and the vidphone, is one of the latest additions which seeks to further establish a human connection without the hassles of cross-boundary interference and social stratification. However, this technology doesn’t come without its own set of challenges.

Kit Galloway and Sherrie Rabinowitz of the satellite arts project worked with NASA to develop the first ever satellite based composite-image dance performance, exploring the financial and logistical advantages of satellite broadcasts over terrestrial microwave or landline based transmissions. More specifically, they explored the phenomenon of distance sensitivity, and how the one second delay caused by signal hops would tremendously affect bandwidth latency and consequently result in awkward interactions. This problem was eventually solved with a more robust fiber-optic network.

In another example, the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts in New York City, and “The Broadway” department store located in the open air shopping center in Century City opened broadcasts of each other, and interestingly, relatives from across the state flocked to the screen to see their families. Some had not seen each other in a while, while others, most of whom were total strangers, interacted with each other. I believe that with the end of peak oil, cheap transportation and telecommunication satellites, this would be our primary way of seeing each other again. That is, until the fiber optic fault detection systems become too expensive to maintain.

Hopefully for the next assignment, we get to do a little more than collages in mosaic, and add some aesthetic alterations that are more meaningful.

Before I go on to share my thoughts, I’d like to preface this by stating that I don’t really buy into the counter culture movement. I believe that direction, objectivity and conviction take precedence over “feeling good”, and the fact that the sheer aimlessness of the movement was what led to its eventual downfall and ridicule. Henceforth, this article would be filled with some of my own inherent biases. I would also like to disclose a certain set of biases on my part, due to my recent exposure to some interesting behavioral observations, specifically about certain political views that were also featured in this film.

Firstly, I would go as far as to say that the concept of pirate television created a revolutionary new platform in which a new marketplace of ideas could grow and be distributed. This was to become the precursor to the online vlogs, and even Youtube, in my opinion. It was a space where everyone could say whatever they wanted, and be cataloged for future references. On a psychological level, there was an inherent level of authenticity, due to the fact that all recording was done straight up without a script.

Fortunately for someone as curmudgeonly cynical as I am, I would say that at the very least, the footage depicting the black panther movement, the feminist movement and the anti-Vietnam war organizers gave a very interesting insight to the level of hypocrisy, naivete and sanctimoniousness that people were still capable of achieving. We’re talking about egocentric narcissists referring to themselves as revolutionaries! Talk about pomposity.

Looking back at the things Fred Hampton said, about arming the populace to form a revolution and about retaliation being the only way out, I was reminded of the time members of the black lives matter movement in Baton Rouge Louisiana chanted for dead cops , and  another incident in St. Paul Minnesota. In both cases, cellphones played a role in documenting them without any form of interference.

As if the director of the movie was somehow aware of my existence, and my sheer ‘love’ of social justice, they decided to top it off in a segment featuring the feminist movement, and what better way to start things off by having them chant about destroying the oppressive capitalist system? Oh yeah. The very system that staved off human misery and brought about one of the most affluent and equitable societies in history is somehow the quintessential oppressive enemy. It’s not as if communist policies and other forms of collectivization have resulted in the deaths of millions. As the clinical psychologist Jordan B Peterson once put it, people exhibiting high disgust sensitivity tend to have a low definition view of politics and human nature.

I would’ve initially accepted the presupposition that second wave feminists in the sixties were more reasonable,( and I still do to a certain extent, with regards to reproductive rights and official legal inequalities) but alas, the wonderful apparatus of open source broadcasting had indeed shown to be self evident the well-kept tradition of autistic screeching, aka “join us or get off the street!” That sure doesn’t sound authoritarian to me at all.

Last but not least, we have some wonderful people telling us how bad war is, as if the rest of the world was still holding a “should we not kill people” conference. The only thing missing there was twenty foot tall straw figure in the shape of a being, preferably a man. I would recommend these activists to remove the proverbial rod out of their rectal cavity and do some reading on the effects of the dekulakisation and the great leap forward, particularly in the death toll category.

Yet, I am grateful that the legacy of open broadcasting exists in the form of Vlogs and live podcasts, if only for the fact that it’s making the world a slightly more interesting place. I’m forever greatful that there are people like Jordan B. Peterson (on psychology), Christopher Hitchens (on religion), Thomas Sowell and Larry Elder (on race relations), Paul Joseph Watson (on postmodernist nihilism), Karen Straughan and christina Hoff Sommers (on true equity feminism) Brigitte Gabriel (on the truth of Islam), and last but not least, Michael C. Ruppert (On energy and peak oil)

In the past few years, we’ve witnessed the death of most mainstream media, with companies like CNN being exposed by whistle blowers from Project Veritas, and MSNBC being proven factually biased by internet archivists. Hopefully, the internet and net neutrality survives, so I get to see more meaningful content whilst staring in bafflement at other weird shit.

I told you I had some bias.

I would describe my alter ego as an invisible non-entity drifting in and out of places. I’m not sure if it’s symptomatic or causal, but nonetheless I’m more or less in suspended animation. I aspire to be  Henry Darger. An outsider artist few words, but many pages. His 15,145 page novel is called “The Story of the Vivian Girls, in What Is Known as the Realms of the Unreal, of the Glandeco-Angelinian War Storm, Caused by the Child Slave Rebellion”.

There exist only three photographs of the man, but everything else that is written and cut up into collages is forever remembered in the history of outsider art, yet he made it clear to his contemporaries that his artwork were to be burnt upon his death. Therefore, it is fair to conclude that he produced the purest form of art.

As for the cycling trip itself, I’ve had some experience cycling free-handed, using only my body to steer myself. contrary to popular belief,I feel that helmet weigh me down and interrupt my line of sight. On the other hand, I feel that shoulder pads and knee pads cause a lot of abrasions. I’m okay with people listening to music as it cancels outside stimulus and traffic noise. I would go as far as to say that those rich tossers on their thousand dollar carbon fiber bicycles and migraine-inducing bike lights are more of a threat to pedestrians.

It was a dark and stormy night, filled with what some may cite as fright. I trudged past the thick topiary and began my forbidden foray into the forest faraway. Though I had a sudden urge to slide down the hill near the hall and film my fall, my phone ran out of battery power, thus ending my saga with soured glower.

As I stood soaked in sweat and rain, and drained in the brain, i wondered whether this parable paralleled the perils of digital media. Probably, as all this was for naught. With the ever diminishing deadline dawning indeed, I returned, wetter from weather, faring no better than my peers under shelter.

In conclusion, contemporary camera crews continuously capture captivating classmates clearly, while I barely brought back bread, becoming bathed instead.
