Title: Escape

Artist Statement:

Escape is a series of photographs explores the darkness and the mystery of dream. Most of my nightmares are being chased by some unknown figures, stemming from feelings of anxiety in my waking life.

Technical Decisions:

Some of the techniques that I use are defocus to create depth and mystery, absurd angles, blurry figures and slow shutter speed to achieve the motion blurs. For post editing, to keep a consistent treatment on the images, I applied  motion blur, uniform grain and  gaussian blur for all my images.

FINAL PROJECT 1: THEATRE OF THE MIND

Dreams have been described as dress rehearsals for real life, opportunities to gratify wishes, and a form of nocturnal therapy. A new theory aims to make sense of it all. These images were inspired by the idea of consciousness and unconsciousness, we recall only a fraction of what we dream about, unless written down the moment we woke up, it tend to be evanescent, the details quickly fading as we made our way through the day.

I shot these the photography in a studio setting, to evoke the transience of beauty and the fragility of dreams, delicate, ethereal style, I use a slow shutter speed 1.00s to capture the motion blur into the image. To create the dreamy/haze effect, I stretch some plastic wrap over the front of your lens, and rub a small amount of vaseline onto the plastic.

Here are the before and after of my images, and their layers:

Exercise 1. The Portrait

For this class’s first exercise, I took a portrait of my friend at Jurong lake gardens. I decided to capture the etherial, airier quality photograph, the mildly hilly area is covered in a sea of lalang and tall grass tufts, making the perfect dreamy backdrop for a portrait.  The sunny afternoon sun shining directly onto the subject, the silhouette cast a distinct, hard shadow on the subject’s face.

Post Processes – I removed some of the hair strands covering on her face and removed all the pimples and blemishes. The most challenging part of the this exercise is to even out the skin tone and texture in order to achieve the natural skin looks. I did some minor adjustment to remove the harsh shadow and brighten up her face to even out the skin tone.

Photographer Research I_Jin Jia Ji

My chosen artist for Photographer Research I is Jin Jia Ji , a fashion photographer working in China and London. Jin has an introspective approach to fashion image making. Characterised by unexpressive faces, achromatic backdrops, and soft hues, his shots go beyond his models’ exterior, reaching a more intimate, private dimension.

ZINE LOCALE – PROCESS

My initial idea is to create an educati0nal Zine, Malay 101. Use food as an example to learn basic Malay for Tourist who is not familiar with Malay might have difficulties to order food.

After exploring this idea, I felt that this is not something what I really wanna do, so I decide to do something that has a more personal.  personal journey when I visit Geylang Serai with keen eyes. The title of my zine is Geylang Serai, the endangered place. Continue reading “ZINE LOCALE – PROCESS”

IMAGE MAKING THROUGH TYPE – IN-CLASS ASSIGNMENT

Pareidolia

A psychological phenomenon that causes people to see patterns in a random stimulus. This often leads to people assigning human characteristics to objects.

Objective
Create a series of photographs of objects or scenery that looks like the 26 letters in the alphabets around ADM.

IN – CLASS EXERCISE

Using Illustrator, trace 3 letters from #ispotalphabets to produce a composition. Using Cubism as the basis of understanding the context of this exercise,  the goal is to achieve a graphical style through the flattening of 3D forms into a 2D composition, much like how Picasso and other cubist artist applied in their paintings. Use Colour or black and White.

CUBISM

The Cubist Movement challenged age-old artistic styles and rejected conventional ideas theses artist wanted to revitalised arts so that it would be more in line with a modern age, they would go on to create the first abstract style in morgen arms.  The Cubist movement reacted its creative peak between 1907 to 1914 and it continues to influence artists to this days.

Characteristic of Cubism

  • Simplified Forms
  • Subject matter is broken up, analysed and reassembled in an abstracted form
  • Limited colour  palette
  • The key concept underlaying cubism is that the essence of an object can only be captured by showing it form multiple points of view simultaneously.

Ideation Sketches – Kettle

For Assignment two, we were tasked to come up with 40 ideation sketches. The biggest challenge for this assignment is to break up the archetypal components of an object and reconstruct them into a new form.

Here is the anatomy of a kettle, its made up with three important components, the kettle body, handle and the spout.

Kettle Anatomy

I deiced to use the “Destruction” approach for this project.  For organic forms, I was inspired by elephant and penguin, some of the similarities they shared is the chubby body(kettle body) and interesting organic lines (elephant trunk).

Organic Forms

For the sketches inspired from geometric forms, I drew ideas from Architectural buildings, perfume bottles and daily objects that I observed.  The sharp angles and edges in these sketches gives a modern vibes of the kettle. However after I draw 10 sketches (from left t0 right), I deiced to incorporate organic and geometric forms together to create a interested composition.

Geometric Forms

Overall I do really enjoyed this project, its challenge us to really think deeper and let our imagination run wild.

Micro-Project 1: Creating the Third Space

For my  first image, I decided to capture the image at lecture hall, as my expectation for university life, it will be systematic, like how those bench being placed and spending most of my time at lecture hall absorbing new informations. While the second image was taken at the basement 1 ,  where actually I spent most of my time in school, rushing for submissions. The space altered by the foreign object(chairs), the unfamiliarity was being introduced to the space reflects my experience thus far in school. The school system  disrupted my systematic mundane working life and I am still adopting the new environment (I know it has been six months).

The characteristics of the alternative virtual space that we had created are personal, collaborative and constant changing, it holds different perspective by different participants which holds or retains special memories. #1010adm provides a platform for the participants to interact through interact with each other by commenting on, replying to comments and liking other’s post.  However, hashtag is easily being alternated, it is a open platform, anyone can use the Hashtag without persimmon. The space will be altered If the hashtag were to be used by irrelevant content such as a space that is outside of ADM is being introduced, it will disrupted the consistency of the work.

Both concepts of Do-it-Yourself (DIY) and Do it with others(DIWO) were demonstrated in the project. Every participant had to contribute their own interpretation of the project from their perspective. Posting it on Instagram using the hashtag #1010adm is a collaborative effort of every participant is communicating(in the comments),  sharing their thoughts and ideas can be exchanged without entering into physical space. In my opinion the project is more of DIWO as the objective, Hashtag#1010adm creates a community binding like minded community to interact and further discuss the topic.

FINAL ASSIGNMENT- “IRIDESCENT DREAM”

Iridescent Dream” is a representation, reflection, and celebration of  women through the lens of intergenerational femininity.

Representing a range of identities, each subject should challenge your own prejudices of  women solely based on their appearances.

Being women in the society we are expected to dress a certain way, when we are young, we are dressing up according to our  parent’s expectations, however, this may not what we want choose to been seen.

Our parents have had a pivotal role in building our idea of femininity, whether through showing us how they themselves dress or telling us how they wants us to present ourselves. The issue that I want to highlight visually was this expectation of being a women from our parents versus our true identity.
