Before

At the first thought of doing this micro project, what hit me first was nervousness and I was very sceptical since I rarely use Facebook nowadays and the fact that I’ve never broadcasted at all, much less a live one. It was my very first live broadcast and my mind just went blank, I no idea what to do. Read more →

Hello Siew Hua, I faced similar situation as you too, like how you feel comfortable with the live streaming after awhile. That sort of strike me that we actually stepped of of our comfort zone! YAY! I am glad that we actually tried this because if not in my life time I would never ever touch the live stream. I felt it was a very different experience like it actually help get us communicate with our classmates more! Lastly, just be yourself! haha I was referring to the part where you say you feel more pressured to show something interesting or more entertaining. Because I believe that everybody have their own unique point of views which end up subtly recorded in the video! Jiayou and correct me if I misunderstand your reflection :X See you tomorrow!

The in-class assignment without a doubt caught us all by surprise. The moment we were handed this project, I was most concerned about the content of my Facebook Live broadcast. I wanted to make sure that the conversations I have with the audience were engaging, the visuals were captivating enough to make them watch and stay, and that I was Read more →

Look ma, my first Facebook Live video!

Hey people! Nice seeing everyone back in school after a good break! It was just the first tutorial when Randall dropped a bomb on us that we had to go ‘LIVE’ on facebook. Not for just 1 or 2 minutes but 15 MINUTES

We were all like

Stage 1. The ‘Really? Do i have to?’

You raised a fascinating point when the junior blocked your camera with his hands:
  • Why do kids not do this when you flash a camera in their faces?
  • At which point does one start to feel uncomfortable in front of a camera, or live broadcast?
I ask the same questions when ADM students appear more responsive and engaged at the live classroom, than on Facebook Live. We are after all, performing our respective roles (as learner, artist, participant) in front of a live audience at the tutorial room, and anything can go wrong during this live "performance". However, this fear of potentially appearing silly in front of a live audience does not debilitate us (or does it?).
Why do you think students are reluctant to do on Facebook Live, the things they often do in the First Space? In other words, why do you think they react to you differently, in different spaces? What holds them back in the Third Space?
You described how initially, you had no idea what to do in front of a live audience, but went with the flow, and gradually learnt to enjoy navigating within the Third Space.
What did you enjoy most about navigating within the Third Space, compared to conventional modes of classroom or online learning?
Thank you.
Expanding on the point about the junior blocking his face. I was wondering if this would be the same in another country; America for example, where there are numerous vlogging channels who document their lives constantly. This would mean the people around them, friends, strangers, cashiers would have to appear in front of the camera. Would those in America be generally more comfortable vs those in Kazakhstan. And if most people from both countries were not okay with it, would it be for different reasons? tl;dr - is camera shyness universal or cultural

This real time aggregation caught me by surprise. No plans or any idea what do I need to say or do in this live video recording on Facebook. Hi Su Hwee! I was nodding as I read your post, gotta agree with how things turned out very natural and impromptu. Anyway, i'd like to know your thoughts on this: Are there any noticeable difference when someone does a live video as compared to taking a normal video for instastory/snapchat etc? Nice featured image by the way :p
Hello Valerie! Responding to your question, I feel there is a different between live video and snapchat instastory video. For live video is more of maybe you have something to tell the world, be it anything and you cannot do any adjustment to it. As for instastory and snapchat there is a chance for you to decide whether you want to post it or not. The content are also different, where instastory and snapchat are more fun thing that you snap in everyday life whereas live would be different it can be scripted. Well all can be vary that depend on the user. :) thank you

Before the broadcasting When I first heard that the assignment was to be on Facebook live, I was quite skeptical about it as I do not use Facebook anymore. It is interesting that you had never broadcast a live video of yourself, even though your friends do (on Instagram and Facebook) and sometimes, incorporate you into their live feeds. Why not? I ask this, because a number of students previously admitted that even though they see the vast potential of Facebook Live for creative expression, they would avoid doing so, unless compelled by the professor. I will be most grateful if you could help me understand this strange aversion that certain students have, to using Facebook Live. Thank you.
I find some of the shots in your live video very interesting, and also I like how much effect you put into capturing those shots. With that being said, I am very curious as to what will you be doing differently if you were given a chances to redo this live video again?
Hi Alvin, Thank you for being interested in this strange view point. Personally I never follow the current trends nor what my friends around me does. I do not feel comfortable letting people see me through a social media platform as it could expose a false image of myself. I always thought that people who goes live via social media are alright letting people see how they really are or giving them a chance to be who they are not, like living a double life. I want those around me to see who I am real life rather than remembering me for my false image or my live video. I love to converse with people face to face instead of having a barricade, such as Facebook or Instagram live when conversing. I prefer to see who the people I am talking or conversing with rather than to guess who they are since they use strange social media names. My personal opinion of why people do not use Facebook live is because when they are done with their live broadcast, it will be on their wall. This makes them more wary of who can see this video. For myself, I do not use Facebook unless the school requires me to use it because I feel that it gives me the excuse to show what I want people to view me as instead of showing my own true colours. I feel that the content shown are not helpful and distracts me making me not productive so I have not used Facebook for 5 years for personal use.

I have a similar curiosity as well as admiration to those live streamers who manage to be themselves during their live streams. I guess they had alot of practice before doing it? I do agree with you that we have to maintain our demeanor and composure in front of a camera. It is one of the things I am very uncomfortable with even though I know that there are only 2 viewers only. If you have another chance to do  another live video, will you be on camera or off camera?
I loved reading your work. I wonder if perhaps the embarrassment and nervousness you experienced could be exploited for comic effect. Your experience reminds me of Social networks and the desire to save face: A case from Singapore, that describes how local undergraduates at SMU fear losing face so much, that they refrain from commenting on the work of their course mates online, for fear of offending them. There's no need to feel embarrassed, as it was the first time all your peers were broadcasting live for the class assignment as well. We were all learning by Doing It With Others (DIWO), the challenges of broadcasting live, through the rare opportunity to contribute to the aggregated video wall --- instead of learning about internet art (by merely reading about or watching videos of internet art alone). You mentioned that although your Facebook friends were not physically in the same location as you, they were still interacting with you in the “third space” by commenting and liking your video, as you reacted to their input.
How is this experience different from a live performance with a live audience clapping, and making comments aloud in a physical space like say at B1-14 crit room or a studio?
I ask this because in a live performance, your friends can also participate and you can also react to them in real time in the same physical space. I therefore wonder how being physically separated but electronically connected --- via a live feed (video, comments, likes) --- compares to everyone interacting in the same physical space.
I would say that the differences are there would be a slight difference in respond time as we had to consider the different element that would delay the speed of our live video. If we were to have a conversation face to face, there would also be an additional element for us to react to, such as body language and the expression of the other partner. However, having a conversation in the "third space" would be less effective as not only are there delays, but we also can't tell the mood of the commentators just by reading their comment.

I'm glad you described your experience with the technical glitches during the broadcast, as it gives me a fuller account of your issues and concerns with live broadcasting. In learning Internet Art, it is especially helpful if we know the blind alleys and experiences of other learners, before we embark on our own intellectual and creative adventures. I wonder if the rest experienced the same technical issues you identified. Despite the glitches, I'm glad you had fun combining social media to broadcast your life and shooting a video.
Which aspect(s) of the combination or experience was(were) most fun for you?
I will be most grateful if you could elaborate. It would greatly help me understand what learners like (and dislike) about learning Internet Art online. Thank you.
Makoto, I understand the limitations of Facebook Live in terms of quality, but the problems you described could also be viewed as creative aberrations and accidents to be appreciated aesthetically. Something to think about.
Hmm! Interesting perspective, perhaps I was too tunnel visioned with visual fidelity at the time. Wouldn't mind exploring this path in video artifacting
Hmm right now I'd say my favourite part would be just exploring the internet in a different way? Growing up with the internet, there are certain preconceptions and features we take for granted. By digging deeper into this field, I'd say it's a good platform to learn the different perspectives that other people have concerning the internet, it's uses and other peoples notions about it's numerous aspects. So there's a lot of breadth and depth to discussed, and I'm keen on this sort of thing.

Wow, what a fascinating read! I found it interesting that you felt relieved that there was no more peeking into your privacy. Previously, students also mentioned they were uncomfortable using Facebook Live.
  • Why did you feel that others were peeking into or invading your privacy?
I ask this because your Facebook posts are often seen by friends anyway, and you are comfortable with that, but not with Facebook Live. I wonder why. On a side note, feeling uncomfortable is a good sign, as it means you are stepping out of your comfort zone, to learn something new. Educational psychologists, Eggen and Kauchak (2010, p. 287) , found that we have an innate need to understand how things work and to find order, structure, and predictability in our existence. They call this need, "the drive for equilibrium" (which is a state of cognitive balance between our understanding of the world and our experiences). Equilibration---the act of searching for order or balance---entails testing one's understanding against the real world. When our understandings can explain the events we observe, the world makes sense, and we are at equilibrium. When we don't, disequilibrium occurs, and we're motivated to search for better explanations. Disequilibrium is the energizing force in learning Internet Art. As the saying goes---no pain, no gain! Lol.
I felt that with live broadcasting, it is very hard to maintain oneself's image if I do something totally out of hand or just stupid. I guess almost everyone is showing the 'better' side of them on facebook which also means that they keep the 'uglier' or the more 'unglam' side to themselves and their close ones. Having to do facebook live gives me a sense of uncertainty as I will not know when i will be having silly faces or having to fall when walk, it could all be the start of how people judging I guess? But I think during the course of these 13 weeks I will not be worrying about image. Haha!
Bao, this is an excellent response and I really enjoyed. I liked the fact that you had so many different and conflicting reactions to the experience. We will discuss further in class.
