4D – Project 3 Final

Missing

She wake up to a typical morning, nothing seems unusual to her. However, things start to get strange when she starts brushing her teeth without toothpaste, wearing socks with only one side and same goes for the shoes. More and more things are missing from her daily life. What is missing?

The idea of this project is linked to my project 1 and 2 which is about pairs. Through the video, I want the audience to start thinking what is missing in it. Throughout my 3 project, the idea I want to bring out is that we should not neglect some items in life just because we are so used to them being placed together. If any of them is missing, then we start to wonder what is wrong.

This project is the continuation of my previous project on pairs, thus the idea developing is not as tough as previous 2 project. I picked out a few item from the previous project and add them into my video. In most of the scene, I used a frontal view, so that the audience can have a closer view of the item. The overall project was interesting to explore, and receiving feedback on how to improve my video really helps too.

How I come about with the title Missing? In my video, not all the item comes in pair (a set of two things used together). They are just items where our brain automatically link them together. With the idea of allowing the audience to start thinking what is missing, thus I used this title.

4D – Project 3 Process v2

This is version one for my final.

After consultation, some of the feedback that I received is the foolscap scene where she is looking for her missing item in the video. To make the video more consistence, I should try taking video of her not looking for anything because in all the other scene, she wasn’t deliberately looking for something.

The noodle scene have the same issue as the foolscap scene. Thus I will need to retake again.

4D – Project 3 Process v1

For my project 3, it is based on a girl, where she wake up to a world that some things are missing. In the video, nothing seems unusual where she wake up and start doing her daily routine. However, if we take a closer look, the video start to get a bit more strange than usual. If we start to think what is missing? Will we be able to know what we automatically link it with?

These are the two video that I took for the trial version.

The video is taken without tripod, for the further video it will all be on tripod. Some of the feedback I received is that the toothbrush scene was taken too far away. The viewer would not know that the focus is on the toothbrush.

4D – Project 3 (Narrative)

Missing Pair

She wake up to a typical morning, nothing seems unusual to her. However, things start to get strange when she starts brushing her teeth without toothpaste, wearing socks with only one side and same goes for the shoes. More and more things are missing from her daily life. What had happened?

I plan to work on my project 1 and 2 for my project 3 which is on the topic pair. Through the video, I want the audience to find out what is missing in the video. and how are some items automatically link together without us saying because we are so used to seeing them together.

I will continue to do some research on how I want my video to be presented, in term of the layout and background and what are some other approach that i could use to make my video better.

4D – Project 2 “Pairs”

Missing Pair

Hiew Jin Yee

I have never notice how some things in life are pair together by nature. When I start to realize how things are linked to one another, I start to have this thought in my mind; what if one of them is missing one day? This series of photo includes items that are standing alone without their partner. The items are deliberately placed on white background towards the left side of the frame to bring out the emptiness on the right where their missing pair is supposed to be. This allows the viewer to start thinking about what is missing in the photo. This is where they will start to realize how their brain subconsciously link the missing item with the one displayed.

The process of coming out with items to photography was tedious. I have a hard time thinking of what item have a missing pair. I tried separating them into two different category so that I can narrow down my selection. Thus, this was the few items based on whether they can function with/without one another and how our brain link two item together. I definitely learn a thing or two since project 1, receiving feedback on how to improved the project, like how I decided to use plain background to complicated background and back to my original white background. The overall experience was fun, and how the project improved since project 1.

Here’s the reason behind why I decided to do on the topic “pairs” is because I chance upon this quote. This makes me wonder, what are some other item that come in pair and everyone just think it is natural for this item to be place together, that we cannot separate them in a way or another.

Sorry soldier, shoes sold in pairs.

4D – Project 1 “Pair”

As i mentioned in my previous post, I will be doing on the theme Pair.

What is pair? A dictionary defines pair as it is a set of two things used together. For me, firstly, in our daily life some item are meant to be placed together in order to function. If we remove either one of the item, the item just turn out to be meaningless. Secondly, pair can also be how our mind automatically links certain things together. When someone mentions an item, how our brain will link it up with another item that always appears together. Lastly, in term of relationship there can be friends, family and boy-girl relationship. They make up the other half of your life, without them it’s like another part of you are gone. There are some many things that come in pair that we neglect because it just comes so naturally. What if one day the item start to go missing, will you notice their importance?

I presented the photo in color and black n white. The reason some photo are in black n white because those are the images that are missing their other half. It also give a loneliness to the image when one is missing.
